Hi,I have just been for my 12 week scan and measurements show 12 + 5 - no concerns raised but baby was so low and due to position they couldn't measure properly, I have to go back on Monday to see if baby has moved, if not they have suggested a NIPT test but this is not available on the NHS?? has anyone had one of these? or experienced this? feeling anxious again! thanks in advance

I had one in 2021, had to pay private for it. That was because they have me a one in seven chance of Down syndrome and 1 in 100 of edwards and pataus though. It's just a simple blood test. Results took about a week for initial results if I remember rightly. It's still only a one in so many, but it gave me a one in seven billion chance of baby having anything chromosomal wrong. They offer it on the NHS if you have high chances like I did now I believe?

AnxiousMum2B98 · 17/07/2024 16:19

Thank you for replying, I am hoping they can do the test again on Monday - if not they have said private only as they won't know my results. I believe it has to be undertaken before 14 weeks.

@AnxiousMum2B98 I did it privately through concepto which was the cheapest one I could find. I found out the gender at the same time.

NIPT can be done after 14 weeks. It doesn’t measure the NT so the scan is just to confirm viability rather than take a reading. It’s more accurate as it uses your blood to check the baby’s DNA. The NHS combined screening needs to be done by 14 weeks though.

I paid for my NIPT at 10 weeks as it’s more accurate. I’m glad I did as my NHS scan at 12+5 needed repeating as they couldn’t get the measurements anyway as baby was curled up in a ball! They couldn’t rebook me until 13+6, which was cutting it fine for the combined screening.

NIPT won’t tell you about Papp-A though. And some NHS trusts won’t do the combined screening (which does tell you about Papp-A levels) if you’ve already had a NIPT as they don’t want you getting a false positive on the combined screening.

NIPT tests are usually around £400.

I’ve had NIPT. It was the only non invasive option offered to me when I was pregnant in the US, OB said combined test isn’t used anymore as NIPT is better and more accurate. It’s a simple blood draw. You can also accurately find out the sex if that appeals to you and helps justify the cost. As far as I’m aware the accompanying ultrasound is just to confirm viability and dating before the blood gets sent, it’s not part of the test itself. Results took 5 days for me but may differ in the UK.

I just did NIPT this past week using Concepto same as a previous poster said, I got my results within 72 hours and that included a weekend! (got bloods taken last Saturday and had results yesterday - Tuesday - morning). They also do same-day appointments for blood tests so you could have it all over with in a few days time if you decide to do it. I did it at 10+1 which meant my fetal fraction was quite low, but given you're already past 12 weeks it'll be higher.

They couldn't do the measurements at my 12 week scan when I was having my second baby in 2021, so offered me the quad test instead. Due to the accuracy of the quad test we opted to pay privately to have the NIPT instead.

I have looked at Concepto and you are right it is the cheapest but no clinic near where I live, I think I need to try and be patient and wait until Monday for a re scan in the hope baby has moved. Thank you all

@AnxiousMum2B98 Is there a window to the womb near you - some of them do NIPT. Or Google NIPT near me. There will definitely be somewhere near you to give you peace of mind. 😊

I know 😊 I had mine at 10+1. But you can also have the NIPT after 14 weeks and it’s still accurate, unlike the NHS combined screening.

Our private IVF clinic offered us the NIPT but we opted for the NHS combined screening instead. We were tempted but we eventually decided that, for us, the NHS tests would be adequate for our circumstances and we were comfortable with the accuracy rate. I had my twelve week scan on Monday and, eventually, after much coaxing, the ultrasound technician managed to get the baby to move into a more accomodating position where they could take the necessary NT measurements. The NT measurement was well within the normal range and everything else looked fine, thank god. I had the blood tests at the same time but they said it would take a while to get the results. The midwife told me that, if they assess the pregnancy as low-risk for the three conditions tested for then I'll probably get a letter in a couple of weeks but, if the tests suggest it may be high-risk, then we should be called in fewer than ten days. I'm a bit nervous but the NT measurements were comforting so I'm trying not to fret too much while I wait as it seems to be a case where no news is good news. I will pursue NIPT if the results suggest I'm at higher risk.

Gilo2024 · 18/07/2024 14:32

I had NIPT for extra re-assurance (window to the womb, they send bloods to Concepto to it's the same service but window to the womb tends to be cheaper if you don't have a scan at the same time).
Scan at NIPT it just for dating/bonding and won't affect NIPT testing result.
If you can afford it and NHS can't screen as you want them to, I would opt for NIPT.

Gardenlady543 · 19/07/2024 07:57

@AnxiousMum2B98 I called up concepto and they posted a kit out to me and I had my blood taken locally. There wasn't a clinic near me either and the other places I found were a lot more expensive.

Evening

I just wanted to say hello and wish you well for your second scan tomorrow. I had NIPT on the NHS after having a raised NT and my combined blood test results came back with a very high risk. The NIPT is a great test, can recommend it x

AnxiousMum2B98 · 21/07/2024 22:05

Thank you so much, I will update tomorrow, sending best wishes x

Update -Still couldn't take measurements of the baby, she has moved but is now tucked in somewhere else! Have an NIPT test booked for Saturday privately. Worth every penny for reassurance.Scan picture looks lovely though and sonographer didn't indicate anything to worry about. But easier said than done!

Morning

Awwh wee lively baby! Really glad the sonographer wasn't concerned and your NIPT will give you reassurance.

Whywhwhy · 23/07/2024 08:54

Cheapest NIPT I could find was window to the womb. Cost £250 for the basic one, most others were nearer to £400
