Fresh Bleed 8-9 Weeks

Hi everyone.

I sneezed this morning (after having a cold all weekend) and had quite a large fresh bleed. Went straight through my trousers, luckily I was wearing black! It happened at work at around 8.15. Seems to have slowed down, and is just like when you’re coming off your period. It’s still red but not bright in colour. I have sneezed since and have had no further big gushes, and have no cramping, although perhaps a slight tenderness.

I am taking cyclogest pressures twice a day (rectally), aspirin 150mg and a higher dose of folic acid because of 4 previous miscarriages. I am already under the EPAU due to my history, and have had 2 scans already, with strong heartbeat seen at 6 and 8 weeks. I have called them and they won’t scan me due to my last scan being less than a week ago (10th July).

I’m hoping the sheer amount of sneezing and coughing has just irritated my cervix, but there was so much blood to not be worried. Naturally, because of my history, I am absolutely terrified. Work were amazing this morning and took me straight home, so I am resting in bed, trying to resist going to the toilet every 2 minutes.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this before? EPAU weren’t exactly reassuring ☹️

It could be a subchorionic hematoma, when I had mine at 14 weeks I was driving and coughed and it felt wet, I stood up and it was a waterfall of blood that kept coming fir a few minutes so mine was quite large. But if you haven't had any cramping, the bleed is fresh red blood, I would say subchorionic hematoma is likely (basically an internal bruise) although if it's just happened that once hopefully a small one. I would push for a scan with EPAU or even go private, when I had mine EPAU saw me same day and scanned me and confirmed baby was fine and no issues.

BloomingSunflower · 15/07/2024 13:42

@Flopsy145 thank you so much for your reply. I literally sneezed and it went straight through my trousers. I was dripping for quite a while afterwards but it’s just staining the tissue now, so I’m hoping that’s the worst of it. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was a hemotoma, the amount I’ve been sneezing and coughing this weekend is ridiculous. Think this week coincides with when my period would normally be due too. I would imagine the fact that I’m on aspirin hasn’t helped either.

EPAU weren’t very helpful, which is frustrating as they’ve been amazing up until now. They’ve told me to monitor it for now, and I’ll give them a call tomorrow and lay it on thick. I did try and push for a scan on Wednesday (when it’ll have been a week) but she insisted I monitor.

@BloomingSunflower no worries at all! I would definitely give them a call and really pay it on, I'm really surprised they didn't scan you to be honest! Hopefully you get a more understanding receptionist next time you call. I think mine was red like a period, not leaking through, for a few hours maybe even 2 days after then brown for just over a week. Just take it easy until you can be scanned and avoid sex, swimming, baths or heavy lifting! Hope all is well ❤️

SnookyPook · 15/07/2024 15:20

@BloomingSunflower my instinct for you as I read your message was that it could be a subchorionic haematoma - hopefully this is the case and little one is fine. It doesn't sound like a typical presentation of MC. Absolutely get how nerve-wracking it is though. I had 3 bleeds this pregnancy 8wks, almost 12wks and 14wks - after 3 losses last year I expected the worst every single time as you do, but thankfully I'm currently sat here 36wks pregnant and about to have my C-section booked in. In my case there was no obvious cause of the bleeding (the last one was decent amount and included clots which really scared me) - their best guess was something cervical as nothing showed on the scans. Keeping everything crossed for you that all is well. I'd also push the MH angle to push for another scan!! 💗

BloomingSunflower · 15/07/2024 15:29

@Flopsy145 Thank you for the advice, and sharing your experience. I’ve been in bed most of the day, husband is looking after me as he works from home. I’m supposed to be on a residential saying goodbye to my Y6’s (teaching assistant) for the rest of the week, but work have told me I’m not going. Least that’s one thing off my shoulders. Not the best start to the summer holidays but what can you do?!

@SnookyPook I hope so, my 4 miscarriages were completely different to this. I spotted dark brown almost black for a while before the bleeding started, and once the bleeding did start, it didn’t stop, and was cramping heavily. Unfortunately, you just never know until you have a scan do you? I’m going to give them a call tomorrow morning and just say I’m not happy with the amount I’m still bleeding, and given my history, my anxiety is through the roof.

Congratulations on your pregnancy too! What an exciting few weeks ahead for you 🩷

I had a MC before being pregnant with my twins. During my second pregnancy with the twins I bled three times and it totally freaked me out so I have no idea how you must be feeling after 4 MCs. I'm so sorry they wouldn't scan you, that's ridiculous in your circumstances.

What you have described really doesn't sound like a MC but can totally understand your worry. Any blood during pregnancy is terrifying :(

I would probably ring the EPU again and ask to speak to someone senior. Explain you've had 4 previous MCs and you are going to do nothing but worry for a week. Please please can they scan you. Them saying you can't have one as you had one a week ago is nonsense. I was scanned weekly during my second and third trimester due to growth issues xx

BloomingSunflower · 15/07/2024 15:57

@DrunkTinkerbell40s thank you for your reply. Did they ever find a cause for your bleeding with your twins? That must have been terrifying!

I thought it was ridiculous as well, but I am not one for confrontation even if it’s over the phone. It’s not one of my favourite qualities haha. I feel ok now it’s settled down a bit, but I will absolutely be laying it on thick when I call them tomorrow.

i feel a bit more reassured that 3 of you have said it doesn’t sound like a typical miscarriage. I have to admit my gut feeling was that it isn’t, due to it being completely different to my other 4, but I suppose you just never know until you’re scanned. I’ve gone into ‘disassociation protect yourself’ mode now though, annoyed at myself for getting remotely excited (this is the furthest I’ve got). Pregnancy is a bloody minefield!

No I'm afraid not! They just said it was one of those things! One of the bleeds was big too with two significant blood clots which I assumed were the babies (at around 9 weeks) so I took the clots with me for the scan!

BloomingSunflower · 15/07/2024 16:24

@DrunkTinkerbell40s Oh my goodness that must have been so scary! So glad everything was ok.

I should be 9 weeks tomorrow if going by last weeks scan, but I should be 9+1 today going by my first scan, so a similar gestation to you when you had your bleed. I have read you can bleed when placenta takes over (and was also warned about that by the nurse last week) but she said that usually happens at around 12 weeks, so who knows. So many things whirring around my head right now!

If EPU are unhelpful tomorrow I would just get in at a private scan clinic tbh for peace of mind, just make sure you go somewhere with a proper - you can call and confirm.

Otherwise midwives sometimes have the ability to refer to EPU. If you call your community team and lay it on thick, midwife-to-nurse it might land better.

BloomingSunflower · 15/07/2024 20:38

Update: tapered off to nothing but have started bleeding again when wiping. Red blood. Not feeling as optimistic as earlier ☹️

OP posts:
Flopsy145 · 15/07/2024 21:10

My hematoma bled red for a while after and would also stop and start, just depends how big it is and how much is left to come out. Still no cramping?

BloomingSunflower · 16/07/2024 07:27

@Flopsy145 I wouldn’t say I’ve been cramping no, but it was a little tender. It isn’t tender this morning or crampy, but ive woken up and it’s no longer red but dark red/brown. All come out when I went for a wee, so I suppose that’s good since it’s no longer fresh? I’m going to ring the EPAU this morning again and push for a scan and just say I’m not happy as it hasn’t settled. I’ll keep you posted on that one!

My tummy felt a bit tender too, like weirdly empty and just a bit weird. I would say the colour change is a good sign, mine did the same. But definitely try get scanned at the epau today 🤞🏻

BloomingSunflower · 16/07/2024 10:10

@Flopsy145 I’ve just left a message with them so fingers crossed they get back quickly 🤞🏻

I poured with blood and clots from 7-17 weeks it was awful and so scary after I'd lost 3 babies before. My little girl is now 5! I learnt that no pain was a good sign/bad cramping. Hope you get seen today and reassured xx

BloomingSunflower · 16/07/2024 11:12

@Flopsy145 @Needahandholdplease2023 this nurse was a lot better than yesterday, but can’t get a scan until Monday. Going to speak to my husband and see about getting a private scan. Frustrating as the trust is made up of 2 hospitals, and apparently I can’t be seen at the other hospital? 🙃

OP posts:
WickWood · 16/07/2024 11:30

I would definitely try and get a private scan today, so sorry the EPU are making you wait until Monday, that would be unbearable!

Hope you get a scan today and that it is good news. Thinking of you x

At least you have that Monday scan as a back up if you can't get to a private one today or over the weekend! Hopefully all ok, take care and keep us posted!

BloomingSunflower · 16/07/2024 11:58

@WickWood I’ve had a look and there’s nothing until tomorrow unfortunately and it’s in my husband’s working hours. He’s a bit reluctant to take anymore time off as we’ve already had quite a few appointments, and I’m not going without him. Annoyingly, there’s one Thursday evening but he’s away 🙃 which makes it more difficult. I said about getting one on Friday but he insisted we might as well wait until Monday, as it’s only 2 extra days. I’ll definitely keep checking for cancellations though.

@Flopsy145 of course I’ll keep you posted. Thank you so much for all your support, I’m very grateful 🩷

I have everything crossed for you that it's good news.
When I had my missed miscarriage, there was no blood, just slightly pink discharge. Nothing else.
When I had my successful pregnancy, like I said 3 bleeds. One was like a period!! So I'm still hopeful for you xx please keep us updated xxx

BloomingSunflower · 20/07/2024 11:09

@DrunkTinkerbell40s I definitely will. I’ve had no more gushes or red blood since the first bout. Had some really dark red blood on Tuesday, which then became dark brown spotting which is getting lighter in colour and amount everyday. Hoping it eases off completely soon 🤞🏻

Hoping it’s all positive. Not long to wait now until my scan. Been the slowest week ever.

BloomingSunflower · 22/07/2024 11:47

Update: hasn’t ended well for me unfortunately. Baby stopped growing sometime last week. Booked in for surgery tomorrow, my last miscarriage was too traumatic to go through that again.

Thank you for all your support, it means a lot ❤️

Ah Blooming, I'm so very very sorry :(

I had a D&C with my miscarriage and it really was so much better than waiting for things to happen naturally.

I send you both so much love. Be gentle with each other and yourselves while you're grieving xxxx
