Recurring UTI’s

Hi everyone, I have suffered with recurring UTIs for a while now and I am under the urologist for this. The doctors put me on an antibiotic that I supposed to take after intercourse as this seems to be what triggers it. That was working for me and kept it at bay. But since I am now 9 weeks pregnant I am obviously a bit more cautious taking them. I did speak to the GP and I am going to ring them again tomorrow but they basically said try not to take the antibiotic if you can and weren’t very helpful. So now I have another infection which I am being treated for, but my question is has anyone else suffered with recurring UTIs and if so what did you do in pregnancy? I’m just feeling so down and fed up with it all. Im worried about intercourse in case it triggers one with me being advised not to take the antibiotic unless I do get an infection 😩 I’m just feeling a bit low with it all, would like some support and wondering if there’s anyone with similar issues? Thanks x

Try to find a vaccine called uromine with a private urologist. That helped me for about 5 years. I need it again I think.

They might not give it to you during pregnancy though maybe research has advanced and they can be taken. I wouldn't have intercourse frequently, if they trigger each time, just to avoid having to take antibiotics so often. I know what you're going through, it's so sad, but after uromine, everything is much better for me.

I am pregnant and suffer with recurrent UTIs with a history of them developing into pyelonephritis (kidney infection)
I had a really nasty one at 18 weeks and have been on 250mg cefalexin once a day since and will continue taking it up until the baby is here. Touch wood, I haven’t had a UTI since but they have been replaced by thrush!
Definitely worth speaking to your midwife as she arranged for a doctor at the hospital to issue a prescription as the GP wasn’t comfortable with it due to my penicillin allergy so an alternative antibiotic was needed.
hope that helps but feel free to message.

Thank you so much for replying. That vaccine sounds like it could be life changing tbh, I’m going to look into it and if I can’t have it until after pregnancy will see what options the HP can prescribe. Just feel so alone with it and dreading intercourse so I’m going to speak with my partner and explain how I’m feeling and that I need to be super careful and try not to. Glad the Uromine has helped you!!

Thank you for replying this has definitely made me feel a bit more positive about it. Sorry to hear you suffer so bad with them 😣 they are just awful aren’t they. I’m constantly dreading that feeling of if I think I’m getting one and it’s so stressful. Sorry you have thrush now 😩 always something isn’t there! I will contact my midwife tomorrow. Thanks so much x

Nothing helped to stop it except uromine. I think I had UTIs every week for years, antibiotics are not a great choice, they make the UTIs come back even more fiercely. But needs must and during pregnancy I suppose you may be worried. With sex, sometimes it's psychological, washing, cleaning and being very clinical may not help. Just try to not make a big deal and make sure to have loads of water before and wee afterwards. That's the only thing that helped.

Hi,

First of all, I feel for you! They are awful and very painful.
I had recurrent UTI's for months and antibiotics didn't shift it. What worked for me was d mannose powder. It was a life saver, I always have it in my cupboard! I got it from boots, the brand is lucovital. It's antibiotic free, you just mix it with water and drink it. Maybe speak to your doctor about d mannose and see if it's safe for pregnancy?

Hope you get some relief soon! Xx

I think I’ve had about 10 in the last 12 months and it’s just horrible isn’t it. I do think mine are not completely going away. Okay thanks for the advice, I’m defo going to look into that vaccine and also need to try and drink as much as I can! Thank you x
