Low lying placenta at 32 weeks

I've just had a growth scan at 32 weeks. I had been told previously that my placenta was low lying but likely to move. Today i was told it hasn't at all and is less than 5mm from the edge of my cervix. I haven't had any bleeding.

I had already planned on an ELCS due to a different placenta issue in past pregnancy leading to a traumatic labour followed by EMCS. But I was hoping to have the ELCS at 39 weeks.

Has anyone had experience with this? Did your placenta move? Did you have to have a C section and at what point?

Yes I had a low placenta at 20 and 32 weeks. No bleeding or any other problems. They did rescan again at 36 weeks just in case it had moved but nope! Had an elcs at 39+1.

I had complete placenta previa by 30 weeks, emcs at 34+2.

seems like experiences really vary. I've asked to have a call with the consultants next week.

@Garman Did you have bleeding?

I had an overlap of about 2cm (technically a partial placenta praevia). ECS at 39+3. Perfectly healthy baby.

@Garman Did you have bleeding?

First bleed at 33 weeks, second worse one at 34+0, I was admitted then and the third worst bleed was at 34+1, emcs done the following morning because there wasn’t a NICU team on overnight.

Placenta didn't move. Big bleed at 34 weeks with no prior bleeding. Make sure you've always got a way of getting to the hospital quickly. I had to have an EMCS. Baby is fine.

Garman · 13/07/2024 08:58

Yeah I had to be 10 mins from the hospital max after the first bleed, and then after the second one I was on hospital bedrest aiming for 37 weeks but only lasted one day before the worst bleed.

WolfMother326 · 13/07/2024 09:20

Yikes @Garman and @Frazzledteacher they sent me home and didn't tell me anything about any of this, just said to call triage if I had any issues. I live about 40 minutes from the hospital.

Mine was similar at 32 weeks but it did actually move by 36 weeks - they did an internal scan to be sure, as it was such a close call and apparently they are more accurate. I had a vaginal birth at 40 weeks.

I did a lot of reading around this at the time and my understanding is that bleeding is more likely with full or partial placenta praevia (where it’s actually covering the opening, rather than just very close).

WolfMother326 · 13/07/2024 09:31

Thanks @notsureaboutthischapter that's good to hear. They did say they'll rescan me at 36 weeks. How close was yours, do you recall?

I can’t remember the exact measurements unfortunately aa it was a while ago. That baby is now 8 years old!

I do remember that it was very borderline - just a few mm closer and they would have recommended a c section. I never had any bleeding or other symptoms though.

WolfMother326 · 13/07/2024 14:05

@notsureaboutthischapter glad it all turned out well for you!
