Ovary or second sac?

I went for an early private scan today at 7 weeks, baby measuring 6w6d so basically on track for dates, I am a little wary of private scan places but I am folate deficient which I know can cause a whole host of problems for baby and I wanted some peace of mind, anyway upon scanning it was instantly noticeable there was two black sacs in there, one with a baby and one without, at first the sonographer said she thought it was another sac then turned round and said that she's certain it's an ovary!. Now I'm no amateur at this as it's baby number 7 I have high risk pregnancies and have had near on a hundred scans by now and never once have I seen another black "hole" or even an ovary on a scan.

Anybody had this and it did in fact turn out to be an ovary or is it likely it's a second sac but unfortunately it's a vanishing twin?

Ovary or second sac?

Hi! I’ve had many scans on my ovaries. On my scans my ovary never looked like this. It wasn’t a noticeable black circle if that makes sense. When the scanner would show me my ovaries she would have to use her finger on the screen to circle it out to me as it is not noticeable.

My ovary looked like this after fresh ivf transfer (and still look like this at 12 weeks), and I think I probably had a mild case of ovarian hyperstimulation, so I think it is possible that it is your ovary.

I also have vanished twin from week 7, and if this were a gestational sack, you would see the tiny lost twin in there, unless you lost that baby very early. A vanishing twin pose no danger to the surviving baby. (Emotionally difficult to process, though)

But I think if the sonographer was almost certain it is an ovary, then it is an ovary don't worry.

Ovaries do indeed have a black circle like this inside during early pregnancy. And every month, mid cycle, you will also have a dominant follicle which appears exactly like this black circle on the scan.
there is no "bright" hyperechoic reaction / surrounding the ovarian follicle as there is around the sac.
Sonographers in Uk have masters level training (if you've gone to a reputable company for a scan - if it's window to the womb you are likely to not get this level Sonographer but someone there trained in house to scan and would not be allowed to scan in the NHS).

@McMcMc Oh okay!! Nice to know, thanks
for explaining. I’ve had so many scans on my ovaries with the NHS, I just had
to have one ovary removed and never seen my
ovary look like this on a scan image. I’m also in early pregnancy I had a scan two days ago she showed me my ovary and again I wouldn’t have noticed it!
