2 weeks earlier than I thought?

Hi,
I went for a private early scan today. They dated me as 3.5-4 weeks. I thought I was 6 weeks. My worry is that I had a positive test 10 days ago - is it possible to have a test so early? I'm worried the baby has just stopped developing. I dont know how to wait 3.5 weeks until rescan.

Hi I did a test the day my period was late and got a positive. I think I was around 2 weeks at that point .

I found out at 3w 4D that was at 10dpo so going by your dates you found out after a missed period? 6 week scans are still super early and they’ve confirmed pregnancy. 10 days after a positive test is soooo early as well. I waited for 5 weeks from my test it’s just the norm

If I am 4 weeks now I'd have been 2 weeks and 4 days (so a week and a half before a missed period) it just seems very early for quite a strong positive.

Yes it was after what a normal period would be but they can be quite irregular due to breastfeeding, so it's 2 weeks after I expected my period now.

So if you’re irregular it sounds like you have ovulated later than you thought and dates would align. Of course no one here can give you a solid answer but pregnancy tests vary on darkness for everyone. I’d be happy to get such a good positive, unfortunately you have to wait for the next scan or you’ll just see nothing again it’s too early

I'm not sure it's even possible to see a 3 week pregnancy via a scan? Was it internal?

That's what I'm hoping, hopefully I'm worrying for nothing!

She said it was too small to measure but she'd estimate 3.5- 4 weeks. Abdominal not internal. I think it was literally a black spot, no fetal pole or anything.

I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t see anything at all that early on an abdominal one. I’d honestly go somewhere for an internal date in a week or so for more accuracy. When I had my scan at 7 weeks you couldn’t see a thing on an abdominal scan.

With my last baby I had an abdominal at 7 weeks and saw a heartbeat and fetal pole :) I did see the black spot she was referring to, no baby yet though, and she did recommend waiting 3 to 4 weeks before a rescan.

Did you see a yolk sack?

Early pregnancy scans can be so worrying. If you don’t see a fetal pole the scans are like a snap shot in time - you don’t know what’s happened the day before or what’s going to happen the day after. You just have to wait to see if the pregnancy progresses which causes lots of stress for mum.

The sonographer should have advised you to have a HCG blood test to see if your hormones are rising. You should be able to request one off your GP

3.5- 4 weeks means you are just pregnant. You can’t see the yolk sack till around 5 weeks on ultrasound.

Your best bet is for that HCG test 💐

Thank you, this is what's worrying me. Unsure how I could be JUST pregnant when my positive test was 10 days ago. She didn't call it a yolk sack it was literally just a black spot, I think a gestational sack. I will contact Early Pregnancy Unit tomorrow and see what they say, the timings just don't seem quite right to me.

Ok so I’d bet the gestational sack was tiny at this stage. She should have measured the endometrial lining too and checked for any possible signs of bleeding - if there was none then it’s considered just too early.

Get booked in for a blood test - it will be quicker to tell if there is progression. Try not to stress too much x

I think in all honesty it could go either way. The fact it was an abdominal scan may be a good sign as it's often harder to see and measure abdominally this early. They're not as accurate which is why internal is better in the early days. Or you could just be measuring small. But equally if you're pretty sure of your dates then it could be a bad sign the pregnancy hasn't progressed.
I went for a scan at around 6.5 weeks. I had tracked ovulation. They measured me at 5 weeks. They told me I probably got my dates wrong or ovulated late. But I knew I didn't. 2 weeks later and it was still measuring 5 weeks so it was a MMC.
But there are so many women on here who measure small in the early days then a week later all is back on track and perfect. I think the only thing you can do is wait unfortunately. It sucks though I know.

Thanks everyone, I've been booked in for bloods today and Saturday and then an internal scan on Monday to see what's going on.

Hcg was 3916 today so just need to wait and see on Sat. I suspect they might have seen something at that level if all was well.

Updating in case similar happens to anyone else. Bloods doubled after 2 days. Went for an internal scan today and dr happy with bloods and said about 5 weeks, saw a yolk sac and what she saw matches with blood levels. Says I must have just had a very early positive. Bringing me back late next week to check for a heartbeat 💓 but they're happy with things so far.

Updating again in case anyone finds themselves in the same position. Went back today and a beautiful little heartbeat 💓 dated as 6+6 so we just had a very early positive! So happy with this outcome.
