I know you can use wheeatgerm oil, not heard about epo.

Look up perianal massage on the net, I'm sure you'll find the technique somewhere.

BBBee · 10/04/2008 15:28

i used epo

bunged one up of an evening on approval of midwife.

do you want me to look at bottle to tell you strength? was bog standard holland and barret one - i did it from 28 weeks onwards.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 10/04/2008 15:33

So, do you put a capsule up there of an evening, and it dissolves? Do you prick the capsule and squirt it up there.

If there is only one strength, don't worry about finding out.

Many thanks

no i used to put it up there last thing at night (like a tampon) and it dissolved. I guess it might be better to prick it and squirt it though if that idea doesn;t appeal.

???? i didn't know about that? I heard that you could take it orally? but you can pop it up your fanjo and it helps? is it like perenium massage? very confused!!

scorpio1 · 10/04/2008 16:48

Ask this on April Thread (antenatal), one of our ladies does this.

oliviaelanasmum · 10/04/2008 16:49

I did this from about 35 weeks.

PrePG · 10/04/2008 18:09

I'm confused...isn't Evening Primrose Oil bad for pregnant women? I read that it may cause uterine contractions?

beforesunrise · 10/04/2008 18:30

yes but WHAT is it supposed to do?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/04/2008 19:01

You are supposed to 'massage' the perineum with oil to loosen it all up. Not sure how effective just oiling the skin will be but it won't help. You are supposed to really stretch the skin to avoid tearing.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 11/04/2008 09:06

I believe:

EPO up the fanjo to soften the cervix.

Perineal massage to help you stretch.

i use one of those kiddy nurofen medicine dispenser things to 'squirt' it up there! not sure it works tho... i'm still preggers!

i think the capsulkes may be a better idea tho, i find the oil smells quite offensive!

paranoidmummy · 11/04/2008 09:45

capsules

MrsMattie · 11/04/2008 09:47

Hmmmm. I'm training to be an antenatal teacher and the advice I have always heard given is to use a small amount of olive oil for perineal massage. Never heard of evening primrose being used, although i don't suppose it matters hugely, as long as it isn't an irritant. Will watch with interest!

paranoidmummy · 11/04/2008 10:01

yeah i use something diff for perineal massage - some zita west perineal massage oil i bought. same as i liketomoveit says... supposedly EPO helps to ripen the cervix if applied to it or ingested. it has similar prostaglandin properties to semen. i think it supposedly has more of it. to be honest i'm not sure if it works unless things are imminent anyway but i'm desperate!

otter1980 · 11/04/2008 21:22

lol - know how you feel re desperate, we have been told that we will be induced at 40 weeks because i have GD, so I'll be doing whatever I can to kick start things from 38 weeks.... dont suppose it can hurt things...

PearTart · 11/04/2008 22:41

MW advised putting it up there when I'd gone overdue, and was desperate for baby to come, as it helps to ripen the cervix (more prostaglandins than semen etc)

She didn't say how but I understand the capsules dissolve. I bought a jar but never quite got desperate enough to use any.

I can't see how it's a good idea before your due date.
