Reflux

Hi all!

So I’m just shy of 28 weeks and these last few days the reflux has been horrendous! I had it a bit earlier on but was prescribed Omeprozole (40mg) and all was ok.

Now everything is not ok! It’s been constant from early afternoon until I can eventually fall asleep as I can’t sleep essentially needing to be sick. I’ve had a bowl by my side now since Saturday.

Im scared to eat or drink anything for risk of it flaring up. I’ve done little and often, not eating late, sticking to non fizzy drinks, cold water, Gaviscon on tap, milk…nothing is working.

I am calling GP when they open at 8 to try for an appointment but just wondering if there is anything they can actually give me to help other than the Omeprozole? Or if anyone has any other suggestions!

Maybe keep a food diary and see if there is anything that is triggering it.
Water was the worst thing for my reflux when expecting my first. My mum has severe reflux and finds the same. She can't eat meat, dairy, onions/garlic and spicy foods also due to triggering her reflux. She finds oat milk is better than water.

@Superscientist
thank you. I’ve changed up what/how much I’ve been eating so not had the same and the only correlation is that it’s anything after about 2pm.

interesting about the water though! What’s the best thing for keeping hydrated?

I think I could have a milky decaf tea or milk and that was ok. My mum finds oat milk helps but she can't have dairy.

I also had pregnancy sickness in my 3rd trimester and I found hot water a bit of honey in was ok. I can't remember if that was ok for the reflux. Cool water gave me terrible sickness.

I also had to sleep on about 5 pillows. I remember coming home from the hospital amazed at how many pillows I had on the bed!

I ate a LOT of Love hearts. The sherbert seemed to help.

I'm 27 weeks and have been having bad reflux the past few days, I've had a few sips of Gaviscon and that seems to be working!

BC2603 · 02/07/2024 20:27

@WickWood gaviscon is also coming back up 🙈

Acupuncture.
£55 first visit and £45 after where I am.

I recently went once a week for reflux. Expensive but instant relief from horrid nausea.

No danger to your baby as no pills or potions injected. The needles were mostly in my legs and feet.

I'd defo try. I hope you get relief soon.

Cold soya milk always eased it for me.

LizzeyBenett · 04/07/2024 05:38

What strength omeprazole are you on ? If it's 20mg you could ask to be put on 40mg of its safe obviously and see if that helps , also are you taking it on an empty stomach before you eat in the morning ?

dragonmumof2 · 04/07/2024 08:12

Nothing helped mine I'm sorry to say. Once I got to 32 weeks I had to sleep sitting up but would still jerk awake with acid coming up through my nose. Was absolutely the worst so I feel for you op.

BC2603 · 04/07/2024 08:41

@LizzeyBenett im on 40mg already
Spoke to GP who confirmed there’s nothing else I can do meds wise 😥

@dragonmumof2
thanks for being honest. I thought it may be as much. I tried not eating after 4pm last 2 days. First day was great as no reflux at bedtime. This morning though I woke up at 3am with all the signs of low blood sugar. Guess I just need to find a balance! Been a tough week

I can imagine, its the worst. I'm 6 months pp and I still have a bland diet just because of the awful memories of it. Pretty soon it'll just be a competition about what bothers you the most. Reflux, hip pain, back pain, pick your poison! It did get better almost immediately after their birth, so there's light at the end of the tunnel❤

When I mentioned reflux to my midwife she said that usually either gaviscon or Rennies work for most people, so maybe try a couple of Rennies if you haven’t already. I also found that chewing minty gum helped once the reflux had already set in. Propping myself up to sleep seemed to make symptoms less severe, but I also figured out exactly what was causing mine so managed to pretty much stop it, hopefully you’re able to do the same!

BC2603 · 05/07/2024 07:51

@OopsieeDaisy
Rennie are already in the mix.

The best day I had I had toast for dinner early then nothing so going to stick to similar for now. Doesn’t seem to be a particular food that triggers it - just any food 🤣
