Due late December 2024.

Got called a day after 12wk scan and bloods to say I’m high risk (NHS) 1 in 108 and have NIPT booked for Monday. It has taken the wind out of my sails and I’m feeling down. Am I being really overly negative? Anyone else in same or similar boat. I’m 40… which probably accounts for much of the risk. Just feeling a bit sad about the higher odds… which is silly because I know age is a massive factor and should come as no surprise. Anyway just wanted to write it down and stop moping and reading negative things on internet! (Easier said than done.)

Would you back a horse that had a 1 in 108 chance of winning?

These tests cause so much anxiety. My DD went all through this and decided to have no further tests as she had no plans to terminate a Downs pregnancy so there was no point.

Normal baby arrived.

107 out of 108 fine.

NervousNIPT · 29/06/2024 18:03

Thanks Mischance and green grey.🌺
Just what i need to hear…we haven’t told anyone about this third surprise baby so i haven’t got anyone sensible to reassure me. Husband also worried. No point in me obsessing until I know more.

Just seek tests available. I understand your worry, however toy cannot control the outcome only seek all answers you can, so you can prepare. Try not to worry, 107 times our of 108 is still less than 1% chance

ExpatForLife · 29/06/2024 18:11

Ooh. Been there done that. With my first I was told one in ninety. I spent 2 agonising weeks waiting for amino results. All was well. Wishing you the best.

greengreyblue · 29/06/2024 18:18

I was told amnio miscarriage risk was 1 in 100. So I didn’t even have the test. I wouldn’t have aborted anyway so no point. I was 28 and 33 though.

malimoon · 29/06/2024 18:20

I had a 1 in 136 result earlier this year (I'm 38 years old and the nurse said my age was likely the major factor). It was a stressful week waiting for the NIPT result but I tried to remind myself as much as I could that I still had a better than 99% chance of baby being fine and in the event that was exactly what the NIPT showed. I really empathise but the odds are very much still on the side of everything turning out okay, so try and hold onto that! (I was happy with NIPT result so didn't opt for amnio on top but was scheduled for an extra anomaly scan at 16 weeks just to check everything, baby looked good then and at 20 weeks and I'm now 27 weeks with no further concerns.)

Maybepossibly22 · 29/06/2024 18:35

1 in 4 this year here. Had the CVS, and full chromosomal array - all has come back fine. 35 weeks pregnant now and no other concerns with baby (just me that is having a terrible time but that’s by the by!) good luck for your NIPT, please try not to worry yourself, the odds are in your favour

AimeeLou84 · 29/06/2024 18:45

Hey OP. I’m 39 and my bloods come back high risk 1 in 137. Mainly due to my age. Waiting on the NIPT caused me no end of anxiety and stress I actually had to take a week off work and made myself ill. Please try not to worry, like others above have said the odds are all for you. Even before they done my bloods they mentioned my age would be a risk factor. Good luck x

MiriamMay · 29/06/2024 18:48

That number means it more than a 99% chance your baby will be fine. Please try not to worry x

renthead · 29/06/2024 18:51

With this result there is virtually no chance that the baby has DS. It's less than a 1% chance.

Quolla · 29/06/2024 19:08

Just to say I had a very similar experience just the other week (also due in December) with odds of under 150 and referred for NIPT. I tried to tell myself that indeed, chances are still low and just last week the NIPT came back low risk.

This is still the most likely outcome (by far, with these odds) but its still stressful waiting for further test results, and I felt like I couldn't tell work and friends etc which I was hoping to after the 12 week results. Best of luck!

BeLemonQuoter · 29/06/2024 19:31

I think the starting odds at 40 is 1:100, so your result basically is only high because of your age and the test results didn't really worsen the score, but didn't improve it much either, so the recommended test is for more clarification. I wouldn't worry that much.

NervousNIPT · 29/06/2024 22:30

Thank you all so much for your supportive messages. It does help to hear from others and I will report back with the results. There are so many things that can go wrong - and that can’t be picked up anyway on scans etc. It makes me realise a healthy baby is such a blessing at my age. Fingers crossed all will be well and I won’t fixate on it.
