SCH bleeding - what to expect?

I got diagnosed with a subchorionic haematoma on Tuesday, after waking to a relatively big, red bleed. Baby was doing absolutely fine at 13 weeks.

Across yesterday the bleeding had slowed to just brown/yellow on wiping and I thought that would be it. However, on waking this morning it's now light red and the volume is increased - I would still say it's spotting rather than the active gushing I had on Tuesday. Nothing had reached my pad, just on wiping. Some very minor cramping, but think that could be my bowels.

Is the stop/start and different colours normal? The SCH is "small" - sonographer didn't measure but it looks small compared to the sac...maybe around 1.5cm (if I look at known baby length of 6.5cm and compare on the ultrasound images).

I just don't know what to expect. I am due for my first NHS scan on Monday, so hoping I can just wait till then for reassurance. I'm just very nervous as I am pregnant again after an MMC, discovered at 12 weeks and I have quite severe pre-existing anxiety.

I had a gush bleed not too long ago, went EPU and found out it was a SCH. After the scan they didn’t seem too concerned & did say they could still see some remaining bleeding, which my body would either reabsorb or come out as another bleed.

The fact that you’re only spotting now feels positive & could just be the remains trickling out, but it’s completely okay for you to go in if you’re still feeling a bit worried!

Good luck with your scan on Monday, i’m sure it’s going to be absolutely lovely xx

@cherrybl0ssom5 thank you for sharing. How many weeks were you when this happened?

I am hoping I can sit tight and wait till Monday, but will go in if it gets worse. It's just so unsettling! And literally started happening on the last day of my first trimester, when I thought I might start feeling a bit more secure in this pregnancy...

I think different colours of blood from SCH is normal, sometimes red but then may become brownish which is better. Do full pelvic rest, when actively bleeding bed rest.

You could ask extra progesterone, they said it helps.

Even after you stopped bleeding, it may bleed again as you mentioned, sonographer said no need to scan again although I know it's hard not to worry. They do usually go by themselves.

@Olivie12 thanks. I am already taking extra progesterone, and am just trying to rest as much as possible, keep hydrated etc.

All of my scans so far have been private (same sonographer), but on Monday, at 13W5D I finally have my NHS 12 week scan so hopefully I will be able to see it's got smaller or something by then!

Adding image in case anyone has insight. It looks small but I have no measurements.

I had a huge red bleed, horrifically huge, and a clot the size of my hand at 14 weeks (now almost 37 and no issues with the pregnancy since as a result). I bled red blood for 3-5 days after, the same amount as a period. Then after that was about 2 weeks of spotting, mainly brown and sometimes it would be dark with stringy bits sometimes really really light. It was a bit of back and forth and then I remember I had nothing for a few days then 2 days of spotting again. It did end eventually though and think the difference in amount and colour is normal. If you get another bright red gush then I would call your unit, or if you start cramping, but otherwise take it easy and hopefully the majority has passed already and the rest will be reabsorbed.

I had a heavy bleed (more than a period) at 14 weeks. I then bled on and off for another couple of weeks. I had a ‘massive’ SCH (approx 100mls) on the scan. I was told in the balance of probabilities all would be well. Baby is now 5 months old.

Just following up on these posts? Did any of you have cramps while you were bleeding? I have bad period cramps since this morning when bleeding started... I am really scared. They have booked me for a scan in a few days so the wait is excruciating!

I was asleep but a really painful period-like cramp with a gush woke me up. while i was awake i’d say it lasted no more than 30 seconds, then bleeding started x

@cherrybl0ssom5 thank you for replying, the cramps are still bad so I think I am expected the worst as my symptoms seem to be gone too. That will be my 6th miscarriages in a row...I am heartbroken..😞

cherrybl0ssom5 · 06/11/2024 15:49

I will say I do think SCH can present itself differently for each person, I only had the cramping and blood in that moment and then nothing after that, others it goes on a bit, can stop and start etc & when I went to the epu they did say this

hoping for the best for you @CarpeDiem75, please try to take it easy for now at least 🥺❤️

Just to add I had some cramping and then the bleeding was on and off for a few weeks. Hoping for the best for you...I know what it's like to hold on to hope when you are thinking the worst ❤️

@Orlahoping and @cherrybl0ssom5 thank you so much for your kind words. The cramps settled this morning and I am still bleeding. I hope to have answers tomorrow and that they will scan me despite being so early in the pregnancy. I definitely don't feel pregnant anymore which is heartbreaking😭
