It was so stupid of me, I don't know why I did it. I was just hungry and getting bored of my cucumber rolls in the sushi restaurant. I phoned the restaurant afterwards, as the worry kicked in, in hope that their salmon is frozen, as that is supposed to kill off nasty bacterial worms, but it isn't. Now i'm worrying myself stupid. Has anyone else eaten raw fish in pregnancy? It was only two pieces, each as long as a cocktail sausage

I ate smoked salmon last pregnancy thinking it was good for me - that's raw isn't it? I was totally fine. The risk is so small, I really wouldn't worry xxx

don't panic.

I ate sashimi (and rare meat, unpasteurised and blue cheeses etc).

DD is fine.

Don't worry abou it. Really

Libra1975 · 09/04/2008 17:15

If it's sold in a resturant in UK then I am pretty sure it has to be frozen first and yes that would kill all the nasties.

Don't beat yourself about it. I am off to Yo sushi tonight I think and will be partaking

I think all sushi fish has to be frozen before it's served, it's frozen and then defrosted quickly, kind of like reverse pastuerization. They probably meant their that they buy it in 'fresh' after the freezing process is done.

You should be fine, I've been eating sushi as well and my baby is ok! How far along are you?

JoyS · 09/04/2008 17:16

You can always eat california rolls and i've been having the cooked shrimp rolls as well (very bad I know.) But it's cooked!

oh thank you, thank you, you guys are so reassuring. I'm hoping the restaurant told me it hadn't been frozen because they thought that was what I wanted to hear. It was a very good sushi restaurant in central london, so i do trust them usually.
joyS i'm just under 15 weeks along, what about you?

just found this from the FSA.

Is it OK to eat sushi when I'm pregnant?
It's fine to eat sushi when you're pregnant as long as any raw fish used to make it has been frozen beforehand. This is because occasionally fish contains small worms, which could make you ill if they are still alive when you eat the fish. Freezing kills worms and makes raw fish safe to eat.

Lots of the sushi sold in shops is bought in already made, not made at the shop. This type of sushi should be fine to eat, because if a shop or restaurant buys in ready-made sushi, the raw fish used to make it must have been frozen at minus 20°C for at least 24 hours.

But if a shop or restaurant makes its own sushi on the premises, the fish might not have been frozen. If you're concerned, ask the staff.

If you make your own sushi at home, freeze the fish for at least 24 hours before using it.

Don't worry - in Japan they encourage it as it's good for you! A friend whose husband is a doctor ate sushi throughout her pregnancy. He researched it for her and they came to the conclusion it was fine.

beforesunrise · 09/04/2008 18:35

no restaurant is ever going to admit the fish is frozen- but pretty sure it is.

i also had sushi in early pregnancy- i think i forgot i was pregnant

you will most likely be absolutely fine. and anyway it's too late now isn't it?

btw, to further reassure you: all my friends in italy and austria and france were told by their doctors that sushi in pregnancy is absolutely fine.
