Help....I cannot stop coughing and it's making my preggo sickness worse

Hi. I am new to here, but I know Mums who have always had good advice from you. I am 19 years old and 4 months pregnant with my first (obviously) :) For about 5 weeks now I have this cough. It's one of those really thick mucussy ones (sorry). I am just getting really upset now as it keeps making me sick. I have bad preggo sickness anyway, but this sucks. It's embarrassing when it happens when I am out. I've got to the point of keeping a couple of small towels with me to cough into. People just look at me and think I am mega contagious or something. I have tried honey, and salt gargle, but really do not want to take any medication. Tried inhalation and everything. I did not think a girl could produce so much yuck. Just any tips please...or is this something I need to put up with. My Mum says she thinks I have whooping cough. I have looked at that on YouTube and I guess it could be. I would go to my GP, but that is embarrassing too if I have a fit there. They would not do a home visit. Sorry, just fed up. I want to enjoy this pregnancy. I am losing a bit of weight too. My Nan says I am looking like a Pea in a Pod. Thanks Nan.

could it be acid reflux causing this??

DaveWatts · 21/06/2024 09:31

There's a lot of whooping cough going round at the moment. Yes go and see your GP, why would you be embarrassed? You expect to see ill people in a doctor's waiting room.

Yes I think acid reflux too. I have it at the moment and the cough is awful and I lost my voice.

Do you actually feel coldy/fluey?

Also there are lots of medicines out there that are safe to take during pregnancy that might help, another reason to try and see your GP.

Any cough that goes beyond 3 weeks should be investigated

Thank you. My best friend says she is going to come with me to the GP. She says if I have a cough out then I can go outside and she will look after me. Makes sense...she always does. No, I don't feel ill, apart from the usual preggo sickness, just mega cough, throw up lots of yuck and then I am fine until next time.

Please just go to the GP. What will you be embarassed about?

LittleMissAlexandria · 21/06/2024 10:44

MariaVT65 - throwing up in the surgery tbh, but I am going anyway. Got an appointment today. My friend says they will probably let me wait outside if I want and then call me in....yes please.

Hi, did you find out what this was? I'm having very similar symptoms for 3/4 weeks now with no end in sight... GP prescribed me some amoxcillan but I'm afraid it's not going to help and like you didn't want to take any medicine so I'm so stressed about it... First day of antibiotics today and am praying it helps. Am at my wits end at 32 weeks.

I had a cough that triggered being sick when pregnant. Couldn't keep much down once I started to cough, had a bucket by the bed. The doctor gave me an allergy medication sample pack to try and it worked. It was decades ago, but I remember it was called Ornade.
I had not been gaining weight properly after 6 weeks of this, and she did run tests and did try cough syrup first.
I hope your are well again soon.
