goldenpears · 06/06/2024 10:36

Go to EPU as brown discharge can be a sign of ectopic pregnancy

Implantation bleeding usually happens at the time your period would have been due - due to the hormones that would have caused your period.

I have been having brown discharge but also combined with cramping - if you're less than six weeks this should mean a referral to EPU (early pregnancy unit) who can check your cervix, do bloods and maybe a scan (tho it's very early so may not see anything). You usually need to be referred by your GP but this depends on the trust and your history.

If you're having bleeding/ discharge after 6 weeks and still have positive pregnancy tests then I would definitely speak to your GP. Especially if you get any pain or there is any smell to the discharge.

I was told bleeding isn't a good thing and isn't normal but is common - and doesn't necessarily mean that what is going on threatens the baby but that they should investigate.

Good luck 🤞 I am 5+4 and went to EPU yesterday for brown discharge and cramping - it was the cramping that seemed to tip them into wanting to check out what was going on. They're currently describing it as a threatened miscarriage as my cervix is still closed but no current signs of ectopic and I have a scan tomorrow but they have warned it may be inconclusive at such an early stage

thank you! this is very helpful information, i might lesve it until im 7 weeks, so 4 more days or so and then see how things are and if i can get a scan!

I had brown discharge for about 10 days. I'm not sure how the system works in the UK (I'm in Ireland) but I just went to the emergency department of my maternity hospital and was seen to within 2 hours. The midwives were very friendly and said if you have any worries it's good to come in and get checked but that brown discharge is very common and sometimes they don't know the reason why. They did a scan and everything was fine. Go to the hospital to ease your mind if it continues would be my advice and there is usually an emergency helpline to call if you aren't sure.

I had brown discharge after a small dark pink bleed at 5 weeks. The discharge lasted a week. My EPU said not to worry at that point as it was old blood. I did end up contacting them again at 8 weeks due to cramping and they scanned me. They found a small spot of blood in the uterus, which was possibly caused by implantation and would have caused the spotting. It was still there at my 12 week scan, which I needed repeating for an unrelated reason (baby curled up so couldn’t get measurements) but had gone by the next scan at 13+5.

I did have the brown discharge again at 10 weeks but this happened right after my NIPT scan so I wasn’t so worried as I had literally just seen the baby.

I am now 24 weeks and it hasn’t happened again since. My pregnancy is low-risk and the midwives and sonographers weren’t worried by it.

Hoping yours turns out to be a similar story! It is worrying at the time, so do reach out to your EPU.

Hey everyone,
I'm having a similar issue. I started very light spotting, only when I wipe, 5 days before my period was due. I'm due on tomorrow and still having brown discharge but only when I wipe. I didn't have any implantation bleeding with first pregnancy but also not sure if this is implantation or if it's just my period starting really slowly. But I'm usually very regular with periods and have spotting the day I'm due on which quickly turns into period. Anyone else had this?
