Private scan, is my amniotic fluid low?

Hi everyone, I've had a very anxious pregnancy so far as my mum had PPROM with all 3 of her children so I've been very scared of the same happening to me and already had a couple of scares which turned out to be fine.

I'm 24 weeks and just been for a private 4D scan, she measured the amniotic fluid and said it's fine but upon looking at the photo with the measurement myself, it was actually only measured at 5.03cm, which, since looking up online, seems to be really low and now I'm worried?

She said it was normal so does anybody know if I'm just interpreting the measurement wrong or something? Any reassurance would be appreciated

I think it depends on which type of measurement they are taking.

Amniotic fluid level is a sum of 4 different readings, and should be between 5 and 20.

The other is to measure the depth of the dearest pool which should be between 2-8cm.

From your reading and the fact the sonographer is not concerned suggests it it the second reading.

Do you have any other reasons to be concerned?

Anybody coming across this in the future, don't google things and try to be a doctor! I've just researched and learned that there are two separate methods of measuring amniotic fluid, 5cm is a normal measurement for a single pocket of amniotic fluid, I panicked myself over nothing. The more in depth method is measuring four different quadrants and summing them together to calculate the AFI, it's the AFI where 5cm would be a low measurement, but just for one measurement, 5cm appears to be fine. Doh 🙈

Hi minnieot I have recently experienced the same had a 4d scan and I noticed a AF measurement of 5.01cm. I'm 33 weeks soon so am very conerned. And reading the response from OhbeaFineguyKissMe has made me a bit calmer. I'm not sure how you tell on the report if it's a measurement of the deepest pool or the whole ammount it just says AF on my report. Did you manage to figure yours out. Thabks x

@Summersunx hi lovely, I'd definitely assume that unless you were told otherwise, it was the single pocket of fluid they were measuring, not the AFI. I had quite a few more scans after making this post, both private and NHS and it seems like they don't often do the more in depth measurement. Everything turned out to be fine in my case and I gave birth full term with no issues so it was definitely just an overthinking moment but if you're still feeling a bit worried I'd maybe call the place where you had the private scan just to clarify that it is just the singular measurement. (Also, if it was the AFI, it would still be within normal range, albeit at the lower end, but just try not to worry x)

Thankyou so much there really is some lovely ladies on here who are so helpfull and lovely...Yea the scan place emailed and said it was a deep pocket measurement not an overall ammount measurement I did think was a bit weird as he is growing well and is constantly moving and sumeraulting 😂so I thought strange if I did only have 5.01cm of fluid. Glad your pregnancny went well! x
