Haemorrhoid hell. Please help!

I am writing this in tears! I really need a pep talk. I've had a thrombosed external haemorrhoid since Thursday. It is getting bigger and more and more painful each hour despite me trying the usual. It's unbelievably swollen- no pushing it back in that's for sure. I've tried sitz bath with Epsom salts, coconut oil, doctors cream prescription, ice etc. Midwife saw me Friday and suggested Cypress oil with coconut which hasn't helped. I can hardly walk, even lying on my side I feel the pain. I'm 39.5 weeks but can't imagine having my natural birth that I've been preparing for with this pain. I don't strain going to the toilet etc so if I see that advice again I'll never stop crying!! Please can someone help with advice!

You poor thing. I have the same but I'm not even pregnant! Mine is finally going down, but the pain was insane and I lived in fear of pooing. Here's what helped:

Drinking loads of water, eating plenty of fruit and fibre, and staying off food that bungs me up (like toast) and things that aggravate my bowels (like spicy food).

I took paracetamol as regularly as permitted. Can you take painkillers? I had been taking co-codamol until I read opioids made piles worse!

I used both anusol suppositories and cream. Even though the thrombosed one was external, the suppositories really helped because they had anaesthetic in them which helped me poo without pain. Not pooing through fear and a broken bum hole was making things worse as the pressure was increasing. Sorry if that's tmi!

Keep up with the baths. Try and stay in for about 20 mins. You can also try an ice pack wrapped in a tea towel. Oh, and Vaseline also provided some relief.

It's awful and I'm sorry you're experiencing this. Good luck! Xx

Sheriproct and xyloproct. Second is quite instant relief as it has lidocaine in it. Both need prescriptions but prescribing pharmacist might be able to give you it.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I had terrible haemorrhoids with both my pregnancies. It made me completely miserable and was all I could think about at one point.
The two things that finally improved things for me were Germaloids cream and very regular epsom salt baths. With the thrombosed ones I would actually massage them whilst in the bath which seemed to help get the blood flowing and shrink them. I know it sounds horrible but it was completely worth it for the relief.

Thank you so much for your replies. The sitz baths seems to make it hurt more - not the water temp but the sitting itself. I might try cold water tomorrow. It's the swelling that's the most painful. We don't have an actual bath so that's a pain. I have been using sheriproct but that's making no difference whatsoever. I've ordered some ice packs for post partum so hopefully they'll help. We don't have germaloids in Ireland unfortunately. Tried to get it before. Thanks again for your replies- it means so much.

You can get Germaloids cream on Boots Ireland.

I know it's on their website but it's priced at 0.00 and isn't able to be added to basket. So annoying!

@PockyMama No shops near you ? I can check my local one and if I can buy it will post it on .

PockyMama · 26/05/2024 11:51

Thank you for your kind offer. I didn't think it was available in Ireland but sent my husband down to boots this morning to check- no luck. He got me some prep h but I suppose if the doctors prescription isn't helping, that won't. I'm actually at a loss. The pain is so bad- I've been lying on my sides all morning and that's not helping. I should be using my exercise ball, and walking etc to get my baby ready for labour but I feel like an absolute failure of a human because I can't move. I think I'm finding it so difficult because I was fine on Wednesday and this seems to have flared up overnight.

I have PMd you.

halfshutknife · 26/05/2024 16:18

Def get xyloproct. It has lidacaine which will numb it. I used sheriproct and xyloproct together when things got really bad.
If sheriproct isn't working I strongly suspect germaloids, anusol type products won't work.

I'll see if I can get a doctor's appointment to get that cream. Just got brave and had a look there. Oh dear god. Tmi but it's so big and purple/blue. It can't be pushed back in and I'm not surprised when I saw the size of it.

It's so crap. I had 6 post labour. Had a section with my second cos I was terrified my arse would fall out 😂

PockyMama · 27/05/2024 14:38

So I got a doctor's appointment today luckily. Had a lovely look. He said the only cure is childbirth. He prescribed me a suppository and said the creams won't work. Said suppository probably won't either but I think worth a go. Using ice was his suggestion. Like he said if men went through this the world would be a different place! Have only cried once today so go me!

My gp recommended filling a rubber glove fingers with water and freezing to be able to place more accurately on the area. The pain is indescribable.

Midnightstar76 · 27/05/2024 15:11

I remember when I was suffering whilst pregnant and I don’t know where I read it or who told me but I sat on a bag of frozen peas or any frozen veg really , it did really help and gave me some short term relief

halfshutknife · 27/05/2024 21:28

Fingers crossed baby comes soon and you get relief.
