Second Labours Very Very Quick?

catsypug · 04/04/2008 18:38

I'm getting a little bit nervous about this now

My friend just had her 2nd baby 2 hours after feeling her first twinge. The head was almost out in the car on the way to the hospital!

Similar just happened to a friend of a friend

And my SIL's friend just had her second at home delivered by her absoluely terrified DH because the hospital sent her home for 'crying wolf' They had not planned for a home birth.

Anyone have a 'normal' time with their second or should I be much more cautious and go to hospital as soon as I feel the first twinge? I really don't want to test my DH's baby delivering skills

My second was 4.5 hours after my first being many hours! This was a nice length of labour. My third was 1.5 hours and was too fast for me - no time to get used to the pain!

Lulumama · 04/04/2008 18:50

book a home birth !

ChasingSquirrels · 04/04/2008 19:00

most 2nd births are a reasonable length. The quick ones are the ones you hear of,
Personally having had a 2hr birth (my first) I would say that 2hrs is PLENTY of time to get sorted.
Now my 15min 2nd birth was another matter...

NatalieJane · 04/04/2008 19:20

LOL CS

First labour was 12 hours from first twinge (15 mins pushing).

Second was 2 hours from waters breaking and first twinge, 4 minutes of pushing, that erm... stung a little bit!

Spidermama · 04/04/2008 19:21

Mine was about 36 hours. Fucking awful.

My third was about three and a half, my first seven and my fourth 5ish.

Heartmum2Jamie · 04/04/2008 20:38

My first labour was 11 1/2 hours from when I woke up realising I was in labour until I pushed him out. Second labour was 1 1/2 hours from when they examined me to when I gave birth. It was a wee bit fast I suppose, mainly because dh & ds1 were wondering the hospital grounds making dasiy chains as they thought I had just gone for a scan, lol!

PetitFilou1 · 05/04/2008 20:07

I think it probably depends on the speed of your first labour. My first was 7 1/2 hours, my second was 2 1/2 and my third is going to be a homebirth (wished I had done that with no2!) Good luck

jessikart · 06/04/2008 01:31

Waaaah! My first labour was less than three hours and we got to the labour ward 45 minutes before DS was born (and if I'd listened to the midwives on the phone, we wouldn't have made it in at all as they were resolute in the 'paracetamol and bath' advice).

I don't know whether to be worried that this labour will be quicker as it's the second, or worry that this labour will be slower as DS was getting distressed last time (and the midwives thought this may have speeded things up). Waaaaahhhh!

Lulumama - I wanted a home birth for number 3, but couldn't have one because I was over 40. I booked a Domino - but labour was only 45 minutes from first twinge to delivery. The midwife arrived over 2 hours after I had given birth. I subsequently discovered she lived over 20 miles away. Had i booked the home delivery it would have been a DIY job.

WombFor1More · 06/04/2008 09:17

1st 10hrs
2nd 5hrs
3rd 3hrs -dh delivered her!

How long was your 1st?? Maybe plan a hb just incase, although that's what I did with dd and still the mw missed it

MadameCh0let · 06/04/2008 09:29

Yes, but not so quick that you're going to give birth in sainsbury's!!

With dc 1, it was 24 hours (but first 20 were manageable).

DC2 though!! AT 11am I had mild period pain. at 12 midday it was getting worse but still not terrible. by 12.30 I realised I'm in labour maybe baby will be born tonight. Went to hospital expecting them to send me home. In the half hour it took to get there I was in a lot of pain. But they parked me in a cube and didn't come back to me 'til about 2pm.

DC2 born at 2.57!!

bergentulip · 06/04/2008 09:48

1st was 26hrs from waters breaking. Full on pain from the getgo.
2nd was about 8hrs from waters breaking. Real/painful contractions started about 2hrs before birth - in hospital. Plenty of time, no probs. Just 6 minutes of pushing though :0)

--Midwife came to house at 7.30pm, said 'see you tomorrow if contractions speed up', called her back again at 10.30pm, went straight to hospital, and DS2 born at 1am.

So, don't panic. You may find you have lots of time, and you'll know when it's crisis point cos it's your second.

'take paracetamol and have a bath' ? what bizarre advice, I always think. Yeah, sure, paracetamol, that'll do it(!)

kbaby · 06/04/2008 09:55

My 2nd labour was actually longer!!

1st labour from the start of my first contraction to the birth was 5.5hrs, got to the hosp just 40 mins before DD was born because midwives told me I sounded fine and I was then 10 cm dilated when they examined me and delvered within 15 mins.

2nd labour from first contraction at asda to the birth was 7hrs, they werent bad contractions but when I called the hosp at 6pm they advised due to the quickness of DD to go to the hosp, I got there at 9pm and he was born at 12.23am.

yomellamoHelly · 06/04/2008 13:24

My first was 4 hours. My second was 3. But ds2 was back to back and seemed stuck (to me) for ever.

catsypug · 06/04/2008 18:25

My first was 23 hours from when waters broke so pretty average but it felt quick because I did 20 hours at home fairly easily, but then when we finally went to hospital, time just seemed to fly and my DD was born within 3 hours of getting there.

I just have a feeling this one's going to be a quickie.

Don't want a homebirth as need to know I have the option of an epidural, and don't want neighbours listening to me screaming

You nevr can tell... i had a very easy 4 hour labour with my first, i had a very hard 11 hour labour with my second, i think alot of it was that i went to hospital thinking it was going to be easier or atleast as easy, as everyone said the second was easier, with this one i am going to expect the worst, that way it can only get better... good luck !

singyswife · 07/04/2008 14:50

Hi, I was 4 hours with my first and they claim 3 hours with my second, I beg to differ. Went in to be induced, pains started almost immediately, a few hours later I was given paracetamol and a bath (pain wasnt too bad though, just like period pains), waters broke in the bath and was RUSHED through the hospital to the delivery suite where 24 minutes later I had dd2. My plan had been to stay at home for as long as possible but if I had done this dd would have been born at home as only really felt the pain was bad after my waters broke in the bath. You never know though, my sil had a terrible second birth but no 3 only took 12 hour.
