Amniotic Fluid or something else?

Hi all

I'm 38+5, and this morning when I stood up out of bed I felt 2 small gushes of liquid (probably about an egg cup each if I had to guess) - enough to show a wet patch on my pyjama bottoms. It wasn't wee, I could tell I had no control over it. It was complete liquid though, not like any discharge i've ever seen when i checked my pyjamas.

I have read on here that I need to put a pad on and monitor it and if the pad fills through then to contact triage. Is a maternity pad ok or are they too absorbent? Do I need to use a period pad or panty liner?

I'm due an ELCS on Tuesday so i'm really hoping this is just nothing and I can hang on until then!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help 😀

Looks like your waters have broken. Maybe phone Maternity hospital for advice.

Thanks, I think I expected more because I had high fluid at my last growth scan... wondering if it was just as i've been lying down all night (asleep!) and something's built up

Hey hun. Sounds like waters gone but I’d expect more, I also had high fluid until my scan last week and they told me it would be a pop and a lot of fluid. I was told to use maternity pads to check for fluid leaking as liners soak up too much fluid

Applesandpears23 · 18/05/2024 12:35

If baby’s head is low you can get part of your waters going and the rest being plugged by baby’s head. Put on any pad - idea is to be able to see the colour. Do contact your hospital as they will likely want to check you.

sickandsleepy · 18/05/2024 12:42

@AimeeLou84 - yeah exactly, I thought there'd be more, but like Apples says, baby's head may be blocking more from coming out.

@Applesandpears23 - do you know what colour I should be looking out for?

Yes sounds like it could be your waters. I would ring triage and they will get you in to do a swab and check. Best to get it checked as you and baby could be at risk of infection if too much time passes with ruptured membranes. They will just bring your c section forwards if your waters have gone.
Sounds crude but when mine went, my midwife asked me on the phone to smell it, and if it smells like sperm then it's waters- it's true that it does 🤮

Applesandpears23 · 18/05/2024 18:05

Best to talk to a midwife but they will want to know if it is clear or brown/green.

I have just had this an hour ago but maybe a bit less than you describe I’m 38+3 days. Rang triage and I have been asked to put on a pad until 8pm then check it and if wet to come in to get a swab taken to see if it’s amniotic fluid. Not experiencing any pain or anything and fluid was clear.

I was told something very similar! I have had a lad on all day and it's stayed dry so I think I'm one day closer to the planned CS on Tues. Hope all goes well for you when your time comes Smile

Pad... not lad!

Mine wasn’t amniotic fluid but I am 2cm dilated and had sweep while in hospital so fingers crossed something happens. Good luck to you x

OP realise this was a couple of days ago but I’m hoping you have been and got yourself swabbed. I had high fluid through my pregnancy and my hind waters went, like you I thought it couldn’t be my waters due to it being such a small amount. 2 days later I went in for a sweep and casually mentioned it. The midwife swabbed me and it was my waters. I had an emergency induction as I was now prone to infection. Please get yourself seen if you haven’t done so already x

@FTMaz

Hey! I did get checked and all was fine. Baby was born yesterday at 39 weeks, although was taken straight to NICU for oxygen and other support and has been there overnight. We haven't held her yet.

Very bittersweet but she's doing a lot better and can hopefully come out either tonight or tomorrow.

The consultant delivery my baby said it was good she came out there and then so it must've been something
