Told boy at 15 weeks and girl at 20 week scan

hi! we had a private gender scan at 15 weeks, baby had legs crossed whole time until the end...30 minutes of scanning later and she got a brief look, and said it is a boy. They are a very good clinic and we have used sonographer before.

When i went home i noticed there were no images or potty shot to show the evidence which we got with our first boy and it was very clear. i have watched the video back and at no point can i see even a glimpse of what baby might be!

we had our 20 week scan yesterday and sonographer was brilliant, i asked her to double check and she spent a while searching and searching and said could not find a willy or testicles at all but she did see evidence it was a girl and we saw 3 very clear white lines on scan, she printed a potty shot and side view for us to take back but we have to wait a week to get another scan privately!

NHS sonographer also does gender scans for private clinics and she was pretty convinced it was a girl so we just don't know what to think...

Hoping someone can give their theory based on scan pictures. Thanks in advance :)

I’m useless with the scan pictures but this happened to us - were told our baby was a boy at 17 week private scan. Went to NHS scan at about 21 weeks and they were adamant baby was a girl, which in fact she was! So just to say it definitely happens that way round (as I know it’s more common to mistake a boy for a girl)! Congratulations on your baby, whatever they turn out to be!

YouveGotAFastCar · 14/05/2024 19:02

That’s a girl. Perhaps she was swollen before? And that caused confusion given she had her legs crossed.

congratulations!

Ahh I'm glad I might not be the only one, our sonographer did persist at this scan as said she was surprised as not as common to get it wrong this way round but I had read quite a lot that at 15 weeks a girl and boy can look very similar if labia is swollen!

Thank you 😊 xxx

Can I see the head pics? I’m really good at skull theory. Never got one wrong!

Thank you 😊 yes I had read this a lot so perhaps that may be the case! Logic would say the 20 week scan is a lot more accurate than 15 but we will see! Xx

Hey yes sure! My first is a boy and he had a very round skull on ultrasound, this baby is totally different so see what you think :) xx

Yes I would have said girl based on that head shape. Congrats!

Milkand2sugarsplease · 14/05/2024 23:36

I usually look at a scan pic and have to work out which end is which - my own boys pics included, even I can tell that's a girl!!! Only from the second pic though, true to form the first one baffles me! 😂

Yes some ones I saw when googling I just couldn't even work out what I was looking at 😂 to be fair she did manage to get clear pics! Thank you 😊 xx

That’s amazing! Sorry to highjack the post, but what do you think this baby is? Thanks xxx

@HES91 hey, this happened to me yesterday. I had my scan at 15weeks yesterday and was told boy. I came home and checked the images I was sent and I don't see any boy bits either. I have attached these images as I don't know if they are supposed to be potty shots or not and I can't make them out. Could you kindly take a look? Thank you x

Hey, did they struggle with telling at all? Or was baby in good position? First image I can't work out at all but second I've outlined what looks like potty shot, bum and legs, it's not the clearest but possibly looks like a boy. I'm not 100% though and I'd definitely ask them to double check at 20 week scan like I did 😂 but like others have said at 14/15 weeks the girl parts can be pretty swollen. Hopefully others can see it better than me. Congratulations though ☺️ xxx

@HES91 thank you so much for doing that for me ❤️. I can see it clearer now. Even still it doesn't 100% look like a boy. I already have 2 boys and their "bits" were much clearer at the gender scan but theirs were at 16 weeks. I have heard alot about swollen girl bits at 15 weeks so I should maybe have waited. Either way I'm happy, I already have 2 boys and 2 girls.

Congratulations on your baby girl 🩷

JessieLongleg · 15/05/2024 12:35

I was surprised a private clinic gave you a gender scan at 15 weeks mine was 20 as it is more clear then. Even then I had to get it redone as baby was shy.

Kimbychick · 15/05/2024 12:44

@JessieLongleg yeah it is pretty early. It's window to the womb, I think they might be the only ones that do it from 15 weeks but they do have a good reputation. Most places do it from 16 weeks x

JessieLongleg · 15/05/2024 14:04

@Kimbychick same window to the womb 2 years ago, it's was so nice for mum to come and see. Rooms are great compared to the nhs. They never charged me to come back. Good luck with the pregnancy.

Most private clinics will do gender scans from 15 weeks, I used MUMS in Solihull, they have a very good reputation. Had my first son's gender scan there at 15 weeks and it was correct but it was so clear it was a boy! There was no denying it was definitely a willy 😂 this baby wasn't as forthcoming with showing between their legs though so I did have my slight doubts after, especially with no potty shot but yes longer you can wait the better xxx

I think it is a obvious little girl. Congratulations ☺️

rwa818 · 15/05/2024 14:20

This is one of the reasons we didn't find out what we were having, not much doubt when you have the baby in front of you!

What’s the confirmed gender at 20 weeks scan ? @Kimbychick

Gentlewomen · 23/10/2025 15:13

Can anyone say the gender by looking at the image 😍
