First period after miscarriage

Hi ladies, I recently miscarried - all started 3 weeks ago today, heavy bleeding for 5-6 days then spotting for another 2 weeks.

I've been told next period should come 4-6 week after the miscarriage but I am not really sure what that means - 4-6 weeks from the first day of bleeding (or even early spotting pre the big bleed), from the day most of the heavy bleeding stopped and turned into spotting, or from the last day of spotting (bearing in mind that too is a gradual fade)?

When did you get your period in relation to that, or even in relation to the first day of heavy bleeding (if that's relevant at all - perhaps not)?

sorry to hear you’re going through this 💐

Thank you for letting me know. It's such a confusing time and the guidance I received from nurses is really vague. Xx

My period came exactly 4 weeks after the bleeding from the miscarriage started. Hope you're doing ok xx

I'm so sorry to hear about your MC. I had an early one (six weeks) in December and am now pregnant again.
I got my next period 6 weeks afterwards and it honestly felt like years. Hang in there. We tried for 2 more cycles before success on the third try and this one's all been smooth so far. I wish you the best!

That's so lovely to hear, and encouraging to hear Lucy - thank you for taking a little moment to chat xx

I got my period about a month after the day of the miscarriage (mine was very sudden and over with in a couple of hours). If it helps, I got pregnant again after 4 months and now 21 weeks. We did wait a couple of months to try again, it helped to have some headspace

Dal8257 · 15/05/2024 22:41

I’m sorry to hear about your MC. I think they probably mean 4-6 weeks from the day of when your heavy bleeding stopped. I have had two and both times my period came back exactly 3.5 weeks after day 1 of heavy bleeding (although in my case this lasted only a few hours). Take care x

crossfitmama · 21/05/2024 06:42

Hi ladies, in case anyone else is following - I got my period exactly 4 weeks after day 1 of heavy miscarriage bleed (4.5 weeks after spotting began - had a few days of that before went full bleed). I am not sure I will actually want to try at first ovulation as energetically still feel like I am recovering, but that's another thing altogether! Xx

Hi everyone.

I am now over 7 weeks AFTER my miscarriage started and still no sign of my period. I got the news that my hcg levels were 0 5 weeks ago today.

I am getting frustrated that my period is yet to arrive as we want to start trying again. I’ve done some pregnancy tests and these are negative.

Has anyone else experienced such a delay after a miscarriage? I was only 5 weeks and 5 days when I started to bleed.

Wildflowers15 · 11/05/2025 11:17

It took me a while - after my MVA I think it took around 9 weeks or so.

Sorry to hear you are going through this too. X

Thanks for your response. I bled for 4 days, then nothing for 3 and then a further 4 days after but since then, nothing.

I’m trying to just go with the flow and let it go, knowing it will come back but it’s hard as we want to start trying again!

Have you conceived since? xx

Yes I did - I think it was on my third cycle.

Fingers crossed for you. X

I believe 4-6 weeks is typical but up to 10 weeks is not unusual.
With my first loss it was bang on 4 weeks from the start of bleeding. The second time it didn't arrive but I got a positive test after 9 weeks and turned out to be already 7 weeks pregnant - I hadn't tested as I didn't want to know at the time due to some life stuff that was going on. My period would have been just over 6 weeks after miscarriage based on my period being 2 weeks post ovulation.

I can't remember the number of weeks, but it was closer to 3 months for me. Mind you, I always had irregular periods - sometimes I had 42 days between periods as a young woman.

Thanks for the replies!

I came off the pill in November 24’ and my period didn’t come for 59 days. I then fell pregnant on the 2nd cycle but it ended in a miscarriage so maybe it is just taking a bit of time like it did coming off the pill.

I shall try be more patient!
