So one thing I'm not totally clear on is what's best to cover baby with when in their crib / moses basket ? I'm due in June and I'm not sure do you use a swaddle blanket , a cellular blanket or a sleeping bag ? I'm sure some of its preference but is there any not suitable from birth ? What's your preference ?

Congratulations! Lullaby trust and others recommend nothing loose in with babies until after their first birthday, so we never put blankets in with them.
My two always got on very well with sleeping bags.

Sleeping bags are only suitable from around 9lbs, so likely not suitable from birth for most babies.
nothing lose is recommended, but there are some suggestions for making blankets safe. Some people don’t like swaddles as well because it seems like it’s easy to do them too tight or cause problems.
so I don’t think it’s clear at all from birth! Hopefully with it being June they’ll be warm in just their onesie?!

Hi
I used a cellular blanket tucked in. It needs to be below chest with baby’s arm over it. The midwives on the hospital told me this was their preference. I think it is choice but mine never got on with a swaddle

bakewellbride · 28/04/2024 20:45

@FTMaz I did the same.

We used sleeping bags straight away. Be careful as lots of them you can only use from about 8 pounds.

We bought some from Tommee Tippee and Purflo that were suitable for over 6 pounds.

We use grosnugs (gro company/tommee tippee) which can be used from much smaller than most sleeping bags. They're great. My first was only around 7lbs so they were good for us. Lots on vinted as they're pricey new.

During the day if he let me lie him down in a basket (rare 😂) I would just pop a blanket over him tucked in at the sides as I'd be there keeping an eye on him anyway.

We also used grosnugs (also bought secondhand). Neither of mine would entertain being swaddled (well, DD2 did for about 24 hours). We tried cellular blankets tucked in with DD1 (which is what the hospital had done when she protested an arms-in swaddle), but she would kick until they came loose. Lots of people swear by swaddling, though.

I used cellular blanket tucked under armpits but if I had my time again I think I'd use a light swaddle like love to dream or similar.

Now using sleep sacks (3m)
