Bleeding in pregnancy

NewAm · 13/04/2024 09:32

I am 12 and a half weeks pregnant, 2 days ago I felt I was bleeding and I went to the toilet to see bright red blood (light/medium) not enough to fill a pad. Overnight it turned to a few spots of brown discharge which has continued ever so lightly. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced anything similar and the outcome 😔 I have an appointment with the EPU on Monday and have been told to rest

Hi lovely, I had extensive bleeding in my third pregnancy and she is now a happy sassy almost ten year old. Apparently bleeding during pregnancy is much more common than you'd think.
For some context, I had gone to pick my elder child up from school and felt a "gush".. my jeans were saturated and I drove straight to EPU and was scanned fully expecting the worst. All was fine and I was in total shock.

So it can be okay and I'll be keeping everything crossed for you xx

Hey ☺️ Thank you for your reassurance. I’m trying to be mentally prepared either way and think positively. I forgot to mention the Doctor said it was a threatened miscarriage so it could go either way 😭 thank you, fingers crossed it works out ok xx

My entire pregnancy is about bleeding unfortunately! Currently 26w with twins and everything looks fine so far🤞🤞
Had several episodes of bleeding starting from 6w then 8w then 12w and a massive bleed at 16w - at first they diagnosed me with a small hematoma but later turn out I have a low lying placenta with one of the babies. Thought was all clear after the 16w bleed but recently I had another one at 25w and again all seems fine.

Bare in your mind all early bleeds are considered as “threaten miscarriage” by EPU especially if you haven’t had a scan with NHS already so don’t get disheartened!

hope you have good news on your scan🫶🏻

Thanks for your reply! And clarifying that phrase, it instantly feels you with worry and the unknown

I’ve just had bleeding again after none for a day and a half, but then it stops it’s so confusing 😭What has been the pattern of your bleeding and colour?

Thank you x

@NewAm from 6w till 16w it felt like it was constant tbh. It was starting with a gush of red bleed lasting usually from one off to 2-3 hrs and then was settling to brown. The second I had my hopes high that even the brown was stopping I had another red gush and all over again. It was crazy scary at the time, was panicking every time! During this time honestly I had every shade and consistency of blood. From bright red to pink to light brown to nearly black brown. From watery to thick to clots you name it I probably had it.
on every bleed I was running for a private scan as after the first scan epu wouldn’t do another one just cervix checks which I wasn’t fond off especially at this gestation.
have you experienced any pains with the bleeds?

That is exactly the pattern of my bleeding on both occasions, it quickly goes brown and just a few spots. It must be frightening when it is happening all the time 😢 Yeah this is my first pregnancy and everything takes so long from midwife appointments to this situations where Im having to wait days for a scan. I hope they will offer me a scan

No I’ve not had any pain at all

the fact that you have no pain is a very good sign, all my bleeds were painless as well.
I know everything takes sooo long at the beginning with NHS, I’ve spend quite a lot of money on private scans with all the bleeds I’m not gonna lie🙈
If they booked you in for Monday will include a scan as well, not long left now🤞
have you got your 12w scan booked?

Hi OP, I had quite similar bleeding to you, although mine started as brown spotting for a week or so, but the sudden bright red and fading almost straightaway back to brown happened to me.

When I was scanned at 5+5, they found that I had a small hematoma underneath the little embryo. I continued spotting pink and brown until (so far) just after my re-scan at 7+5. Both scans were great and we saw a heartbeat. By the second scan, they couldn’t see the hematoma any more, and I’ve ‘graduated’ from EPU to wait for my normal 12-week scan now (I’m currently 9+1).

I hope it’s a similar outcome for you. Seeing blood when you wipe in pregnancy is terrifying, and I’d had a MMC previously which first showed as brown spotting, so I was beside myself with worry. Keeping everything crossed for you, it really sounds like a characteristic hematoma

Hey, thank you for your reply didn’t get a chance to reply it felt like a pretty full on week with also my 12 week scan. Everything was fine, no reason found for the bleeding still having some brown discharge but been reassured this can happen, thanks again ☺️

Hey! Everything was fine at my scans 😊Yeah that wait for the scan felt like forever! I had my 12 week scan too and it was fine, i feel so lucky I really though it was over. I’ve just been having brown discharge for over a week now but EPU don’t seem concerned an they can’t find a reason, it’s a bit worrying but sounds like it’s normal from people I’ve asked on here. Hope it clears up soon!
