What do first movement feel like?

Hey all!

I've been told baby's first movements feel like "flutters", "butterflies" or "bubbling" almost like gas?

I felt something yesterday evening and I'm feeling it again today at around the same time of day but it's not at all how it's been described!

It's more like.. I honestly don't even know how to describe it!
It's below my belly button and to the left (Sonographer at first scan said baby's attached themselves to my left side)

It's a little like a very gentle flick, a little like a muscle spasm/twitch - kinda like when your eyelid twitches (but just the once every few minutes or so, not rapid and repeated like a heart rate).
I'll feel nothing all day till around 7-8pm when I'm sat down consistently then suddenly a wee "tap".
Then nothing for about a minute or two then a "tap" then nothing for maybe 4 or 5 minutes then "tap" on and off until I got to bed then it'll settle down to nothing again.

Is baby making him or her self known at last?!
(I'm 19 weeks and this is my first for context, so no idea what I'm meant to be feeling! ;u;)

It’s not the most romantic analogy, but you know when you have an upset stomach and you get that sort of gurgle where you think you might need to run to the loo? mine felt like that (except in a different place, obviously).

Row23 · 11/04/2024 21:16

I think I remember mine feeling like a little twitch/ spasm like you mention when I first started noticing them.
I didn’t feel anything for definite until about 20 weeks, but before that I did have the flutters or gentle spasm type feelings which I realised must have been movements.
I would say if you can feel something that you can’t explain as being an upset stomach or digestion or gas etc, then it’s most probably baby’s movements! It’ll feel different for everyone depending on where your placenta is and baby’s position etc.

Hotmalibu94 · 11/04/2024 21:16

I described it exactly as you did- a muscle twitch 😊 so sounds like it might be bub!
I kept getting little twitches on my right side, and then when I went for my 20 week scan they said my placenta was anterior and on the left which is why I was feeling baby on the right.
Got stronger and stronger very quickly and DH felt her kick within the next 2 weeks 😊

Yes OP it could be 'first contact'. Exciting times ahead. Enjoy it. Best wishes xx

FlakyAquaQuoter · 11/04/2024 21:18

That sounds very similar to how I felt my DD! I was much later at 24 weeks and with a teeny bump at the time, I could still lay on my front which is when I felt it the most. I can still almost feel it when I put my mind to it. A lovely little hello!

KoolKookaburra · 11/04/2024 21:19

Yes! That's it! It's so slight that you find yourself going oh is that the baby? Nah can't be. But it is and you'll notice as it gets stronger and stronger

Isthisexpected · 11/04/2024 21:19

Mine was a twitch like an eye spasm too, but I had anterior placenta so much later on with my first. Had what you describe with my second at about 19 weeks though! Then it felt like bubbles popping for a while as well.

merryandbrightdelight · 11/04/2024 21:22

Aw this thread has made me smile! Sounds exactly like it op, keep an eye out and I'll get longer and more frequent. Enjoy, it's magical

peonyjam · 11/04/2024 21:24

That's it! For me it felt exactly like that. A muscle twitch or a heartbeat.

SpicyMoth · 11/04/2024 21:26

Thank you so much everyone, I've loved reading everyone's wee stories about first movements!! <3
It's so nerve wracking with your first, idk about anyone else but I can never tell what could be something or what's just my imagination!!
I've been so keen to feel something as everyone in my life keeps asking how baby is and I just have to sheepishly say "I have no idea until the next scan to be honest, but I'm HUNGRY!" hahaha
Now thankfully I can say at least say I think I'm starting to feel little hello's every now and then! 💓

Mine was like a feint brief bubble sensation. Maybe like a slight muscle twitch or like when your stomach goes funny if you are in a car and go up and down a bit of a hill/bump if that makes sense? I wrote it off the first few times, but then noticed it more and more as the weeks went on. Mine started at about 19/20 weeks but it wasn’t until about 22 weeks when I realised it was movements because it wasn’t what I expected.

He was kicking away during the 20 week scan though and I didn’t feel that, so it’s odd that it was on occasion, maybe if he caught a certain area or the placenta? No idea.

Darkedonlinen · 11/04/2024 21:42

It feels like a little bubble or tapping. I only really felt it at night when laying down. I found from 24 weeks movements got a lot stronger very suddenly. I started taking omeprazole for heartburn around this time and thought that was causing bigger trapped wind bubbles and gurgles when it was actually baby!

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/04/2024 21:46

Mine felt similar to that, low down on the right hand side (on or even below my knicker line).

It didn't really get much stronger or more consistent until about 23/24 weeks I think. Now 32 weeks and being regularly booted in the guts from all kinds of angles, but still get that gurgling / twitching low on the right hand side now and again too.

daisychain233 · 11/04/2024 21:49

Mine was exactly the same and I described it in the same way - like a muscle spasm or
twitch! So very much sounds like it’s baby.

DappledThings · 11/04/2024 21:50

It's a little like a very gentle flick, a little like a muscle spasm/twitch - kinda like when your eyelid twitches
That's exactly how I described my first movements too

Xur · 11/04/2024 21:51

Yeah it’s like…you know what it is like when divers are breathing underwater with the tank and when they exhale they let the air out on and you see the bubbles going up in the water?
Thats how it is.
for me the first ever feeling was like as if someone was tickling me from the inside, like an eel spiralling and orbiting itself in my belly 😂 such a strange sensation

Twinkletwinklelil · 12/04/2024 12:09

Mine felt like taps.. or pops, like popcorn popping
