1:90 Chance My Child Could Have Downsydrome.

Hi.

I had a phone call from my midwife today regarding my quad screening, I was 15 weeks 5 days when they took my blood to do the screening and I had a phone call today and they said that my chance is 1/90 and something about pepole are usually 1/150? But she said I'm 1/90 chance my midwife was throwing all these numbers at me and how now got me really worried

I've had 1 boy and 1 girl, this will be my 2nd baby girl 💗

So they said I'm 1/90 chance of baba having DS

And offerd me 2 different tests,

  1. Test were they take some of the fluid from around baby [with a high chance of a misscaridge]
  1. Another blood test,

Of course I took the offer of another bloodtest I have to go in tmorrow for them to take my blood,

I was just wondering if anyone could help me make any sense of it and if my baby is at high risk of DS or not? My other 2 kids nothing like this was mentioned..

This was Cardiff Univercity Hospital Of Wales

Basicly I'm asking is

Am I high risk being a 1:90 chance? I'm only 27 no one on my side of the family have DS or My Baby Dad's?

Thanks girls

[I've attached some scan photos]

Your midwife said 1 in 150,000 is the low risk number, not 1 in 150.

She probably gave you lots of information on the phone call but it's important you have accurate information in your head.

There's still a really good chance baby does not have DS and the NIPT will give you a much much better idea of what's happening.

Hi, just wanted to say, I had my baby girl when I was 26. She has downs but she’s 16 now and living her best life! Try not to worry too much at this stage. I personally don’t find the stats very helpful because they don’t tell you for sure and even if your baby does have downs, stats don’t tell you anything useful like if your baby has any health problems. So if you want to know for sure, then get an amnio done and then at least you’ve got the full facts.

I hope you're able to take some comfort from these posts, mumsn3tx.

I think Emmzo's post explains a little more around what the numbers that were thrown at you mean.

I vividly remember that sort of 'disconnect' you're likely feeling - I'd never had any serious health concerns or issues and so just expected my blood test to be fine. So when it came back with such a high risk, I was really thrown.

I wish you all the very best

SwordToFlamethrower · 08/04/2024 21:09

That's about 98% chance of having a healthy baby

Low risk is usually 1 in 150,000

1 in 150 is the cut off for a high risk result at my trust, so yes, 1 in 90 is very high risk.

1 in 90 isn't really high risk it means 89 out of 90 babies will be fine. Obviously not as good as a much bigger number but realistically chances are still very much on your side.

mumsn3tx · 08/04/2024 21:27

So I'm terms my health visitor meant outmof 90 baby's born 1 baby is born with no problems and the 1 baby is born with DS

Yes that's right - but that is considered high risk as for most people it would be much lower than that.

So Mine Was 1/90 so me and 89 women who are 1/90 results back 89 of our baby's would be fine and the 1 baby would have ds

As we are 1/90?

Out of 90 babies born to a woman exactly like you… the same age, weight, and with the same levels of the various things they test for in the bloods as you have - I.e. all the elements that go into the quad test calculation… if 90 women had identical results to yours, one of those would be expected to have Downs, the other 89 would not xx

It’s so natural to worry, I think it’s the not knowing either way that is scary as you don’t know how to feel until you know for sure! This happened to me, I had 1/27 chance. I got a call and they invited me in for a chat, I got offered a NIPT test something they don’t automatically offer on the NHS unless you meet a certain criteria, is this the other blood test they have offered you? My results come back low, meaning it was very unlikely but the two weeks of worry really did put a lot of stress on me. I hope everything comes back ok for you :)

mumsn3tx · 10/04/2024 18:25

Update ; I have done another blood test yeasterday I asked what the test was called and it is called NIPT Witch is suppose to be 99% accurate so now I have to wait for up to 2 weeks for the results I will keep you all updated!

It's usually quicker than two weeks. Did you ask to find out the sex too? Fingers crossed for you.

They didn't ask, they just said that the test is NIPT and I'll get the results in 2 weeks we had a private scan at 16 weeks 4 days and revealed the gender of our little girl 💗 so we will have 2 girls and 1 boy ;)

Does it help to look at it as a 0.01% risk?

Your maths is off there. You can’t mix probability expressed as a proportion of 1 whole and percentages, which are proportions of 100.
A one in ninety chance is the same as a 1.11% chance or a probability of 0.011
A 0.01% chance is the same as a 1 in 10,000 chance.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 11/04/2024 00:36

I think @Marghogeth was talking about the amnio test at 1/200 risk of miscarriage , not the 1/90 risk of Downs.

MissHavershamReturns · 11/04/2024 11:40

The 1 in 200 risk is 0.5% though, right? @ShadesofPoachedSmoke

Louisesasha · 22/05/2024 11:24

Hey Op, I have had the same results from my quad test and I am now waiting for the Nipt test. What were the results of your test?
