Vomitting blood? Sorry tmi!

Hi

Was hoping someone could help. Am now 17 weeks and morning (ha ha) sickness is still going strong. I can barely eat and some days anything I do eat comes straight back up.

Whenever I am sick my nose bleeds with the force of it - not hugely but enough to concern me slightly. However when I was sick earlier this morning I noticed quite a bit of blood in it.

Nothing feels too sore down there apart from the usual cramping pain in the stomach from all the vomitting so I am guessing that I have swallowed some of the blood from my nose rather than there being soemthing else wrong? Sorry I told you this was tmi!

I dont want to talk to the mw/doctor about it as I learnt last pregnancy very quickly that unless you are actually about to die not to contact them - either because they will just dimiss you or blow it out of proportion and do a million useless tests on you.

Anyone else experience this?

I'm sorry you've been so sick... I hope it passes soon. I don't really know about blood in vomit (though to be honest I would definitely check it out with doctor if I were you) but I do know that nosebleeds in pregnancy are very very common & not really something to be concerned about. Poor you! You're really having a rotten time, aren't you? I just wanted to reassure you that you're not on your own and that I vomitted blood too and also didn't feel like telling the healthcare professionals, who frankly do not fill me with confidence. I've heard that they won't treat you unless you've eaten practically nothing for about three days. However, if this is you, you need to check that you have enough nutrients in your body as you could be sicking up nutrients that your baby needs.

It only happened to me once and, like you, I didn't feel any pain afterwards. I never had any nosebleeds while vomitting, but as the blood was very red, I assumed that I tore something inside while vomitting. I think I found the shock harder to deal with than the actual process of coughing up blood - I was in quite a state for about an hour afterwards. This was also because I hadn't had any morning sickness for a week and then it came back.

I had hyperemesis with all mine and experienced vomiting blood - it was bleeding from my throat just from the trauma.

things that helped:

total bedrest - only possible if you have no other children and can get a doctor's certificate.

sucking ice cubes

Sipping sparkling water through a straw - little and often

One teaspoonful of pureed rice or vegetables every hour, nothing else.

Actually - I think the health professionals are more clued up than they used to be. At the hospital where I work, they do admit women with hyperemesis, put them on intravenous fluids for 24 hours and it really seems to break the cycle and get them more or less on their feet again.

This seems more likely if you turn up at A&E than if you seek advice elsewhere - so I guess it depends whether you can face the wait in A&E.

I do sympathise - it is torture.

I had hyperememsis during my 1st pregnancy and was hospitalised with dehydration (twice) - I didn't vomit blood but the woman in the next bed did. (it was due to damage to her throat rather than lower down which is apparently less worrying)

A few months after I had dd1 I was sick, and vomited around 16 times in a few hours (some sort of bug) I vomited blood and rang NHS direct who told me to go to A&E. Again, it was damage to my throat caused by the violent vomiting. My theory is that there was a weakness there already due to my hyperemesis.

Best to get it checked out really - rarely there can be a problem in your stomach or lower down. Hope you are soon better. x

My dd vomited blood last year it turned out to be stomach irritation but was painful so probably not the same thing. But what I did learn is that the stomach will not digest blood so it just rejects it and you vomit. So could well be from the nose bleeds or, as they first thought with my dd, a mallory weis tear which is as excitable mentioned I think, where you retch so much being sick or coughing that you get a small tear. It wasn't thought to be dangerous I don';t think but may be worth talking to someone medical as they did prescribe an antacid to dd when they thought it was that to help heal it. Oh dear sorry if that doesn't make much sense, long day!

p.s. like 3littlefrogs I had fantastic treatment both from 2 of the GPs at my surgery (one male and one female), and also the staff in the hospital were very sympathetic and caring.

I really do sympathise with you; originally I wanted 3 or 4 children but we are stopping at 2. Dh had the snip a few weeks after dd2 was born. It is no exaggeration to say that this relentless nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is quite traumatic.

I was vomitting blood, accompanied by nosebleeds, switfly followed by about 5 weeks of hyperemisis, for which I was in and out of hospital until about a week ago (I am now 15 weeks).

The fisrt time I vomited blood (8 weeks) I panicked and went to A&E on the advice of NHS Direct. If the blood is bright red, and recognizably blood, then it is likely that you have torn your throat lining and that's where it from. With me it took about a fortnight to heal (by itself), and it felt like a big sore lump, a bit like tonsilitis.

If the blood brown and old, like coffee grains, then it is likely to indicate internal haemorraging.

With the hyperemisis, my GP referred me to the hospital and rang them up to get me admitted. He decided I was in no state to sit in A&E. It took a lot longer thab 24 hours to sort me out though!

Like 3LittleFrogs and OnePieceofLoliipop, I thought that the treatment I got from my GP and hospital for hy caseoeremisis was really good, sympathetic etc. My GP said I was the worst case he'd ever had!!! Not sure that that makes me feel better. Can still only really drink cold fizzy water and mint tea. Am paranoid about dehydration and am obsessively writing down everything I drink to make sure I get at least 2 litres everyday.

I didn't have hyperemesis - you poor soul! - but I did pick up a D&V bug whilst 14 weeks pregnant with DD2 from DD1.

After vomitting every hour for about 14 hours, I started seeing blood in my sick, rang NHS Direct and got right in to see out of hours doc at the hospital, who admitted me straightaway.

Having some IV fluids for 24 hours and resting in bed and eating ice chips helped a LOT!

Please get checked out and get the help you need.

Thanks for your responses - havent had any blood for a few days so am guessing it wasnt anything too serious.

Will mention it to my midwife on my next check up but so reluctant to say anything as sods law they will over react. Saying that they dont seem bothered about the fact that I am still losing weight at 17 weeks and still unable to eat anything but a very odd and basic diet.

Last time it got a bit better after 20 weeks so am hoping. Am getting very depressed with it now as I am too scared to eat due to how it makes me feel or the fact it comes straight back up again. Just hoping this all resolves itself soon.
