Hi all,
attended EPAU a week ago due to some spotting and back pain. Had bloods done and hcg came back at 4800 so also had an ultrasound scan (TV). On scan sonographer could see yolk sac and fetal pole but no heartbeat yet - dated at 5+5. They recorded it as an inconclusive scan and rebooked me for a week later repeat scan (now tomorrow).
has anyone ever been before told no heartbeat and gone back and everything ok?
I’ve got the worst anxiety I’m going to go and there’s going to be no heartbeat :(

Before 7 weeks it's not certain you'll see a heartbeat. After 7 weeks if one isn't present it's less likely to be a good outcome. Easier said than done but try not to worry - definitely too early for you to conclusively expect a heartbeat and draw anything from the fact there wasn't one.

I had an IVF Viability scan at 5+6. Saw viability of pregnancy but no heartbeat. I had a bleed overnight and went back the next day. All was fine, and heartbeat seen - only 24 hours later but that day made all the difference

It can be normal not to see a heart beat at 5+5. I did IVF and had a choice between a scan at 6+0 or 7+5 and waited until the second date because I knew that I wouldn't cope if I didn't see a heart beat even knowing it was in the realms of normal.
🤞 For you scan tomorrow.

Thankyou all so much for the kind words. Trying to keep positive for tomorrow but anxiety getting the better of me.
@Bigbaby2024 how crazy that one day can make the difference! X

Hi can I ask how this went for you? I’ve had complications so had a scan at epau and I am measuring 5 weeks 5 days, saw blob but no heartbeat. Was it ok for you? Xx

sel2223 · 19/03/2025 10:22

You wouldn't expect to see a heartbeat before 6 weeks, some don't see one until 7 weeks.
What you've described is normal for 5+5 and won't tell you anything about the viability of the pregnancy.
Good luck with your next scan
