How soon after high risk NT result is NIPT carried out NHS?

12 week scan coming up and if the results come back high risk we'd like to do the NIPT straight away.

I've heard you should get a call within 3 days if the results come back high risk, but does anyone know what the typical waiting time is to get booked in for the NIPT on NHS after this call?

I just had this experience - 12w scan and tests on Thursday, got a call the next Thursday to say had come back higher chance for one syndrome (1 in 136 so not terrible but ofc you worry) and I was able to go in the next morning (Friday) to get the NIPT. They called me with results on Thursday so just under a week later/two weeks after initial scan. All low chance so big relief. Fetal medicine nurses were great, answered all my questions, made themselves available if I needed anything during the wait.

I had my screening tests on the Wednesday, got a call the following Tuesday morning with a 1:34 chance for Edwards/ Patau syndrome and was offered the NIPT same day.

Thanks both - really good to hear they move quickly after the initial scan as I'm sure it must be a stressful wait.

@Sunnysides hope you get some reasurrance from the NIPT.

I have a very similar situation. It’s so scary isn’t it! Thinking of you.
I was called to say my 12 week screening test results were high chance.
1:130 chance of down syndrome at birth.
HCG:2.04
NT:1.7
PAPP-A:0.31
I am 30 years old.
I had the NIPT test done on Thursday and I’m so anxious. I can’t think of anything else whilst I wait. Any advice?

malimoon · 20/04/2024 10:14

@Mummy20242020 I haven't got any very good advice but I agree the wait is horrible. Your odds are very similar to what mine were and as I said above it has turned out okay for me (I've had an extra scan since NIPT and everything looking good). Try to remember that based on those figures you have more than 99% probability of a low-chance NIPT. It is very very likely to be okay. But honestly I just tried to keep busy and played a lot of computer games as they kept my brain occupied but didn't demand a lot of complex thinking...!

@malimoon Thank you so much for your response. You are absolutely right and when you put it as a percentage I would agree that hopefully things will be ok. Thank you!

How long did it take for your NIPT results?

malimoon · 20/04/2024 10:17

@Mummy20242020 just under a week, they took my bloods Friday morning and I heard back Thursday lunchtime

Mummy20242020 · 20/04/2024 10:18

@malimoon That is really quick. I think every day just feels like forever at the moment but like you said it’s good to keep busy! Mine were done on Thursday so hopefully I’ll hear by some point next week. Thank you!

malimoon · 20/04/2024 10:20

@Mummy20242020 yeah I was very glad it was quick because it was just before the bank holiday weekend and I really didn't want to wait for all that extra time. do try and remember that better-than-99% chance, I was repeating it like a mantra all week. good luck for your results and I'm thinking of you!

Did you get your results? I’m waiting for mine now and very anxious
