Sickness ~ Prescribed Xonvea

I am only 7/8 weeks 3rd pregnancy. I’ve had terrible morning sickness but it’s been all day and ongoing for two weeks now, I’m either sick all day or feel incredibly sick all day enough that I’m hardly eating. I never had this with the other two. The Dr has prescribed me Xonvea, I’m a little wary of taking it. Any advice? Also any tips that helped anyone with the sickness!? Thanks

Xonvea is amazing! It worked well for me when I had hyperemesis. It takes a week or so to build up in your system but stopped my sickness. You may need ondansatron alongside it but xonvea is being used more and more for severe pregnancy sickness.
I hope it works well for you and you start to feel better.

I also took xonvea this was after trying an few other medications. It made me extremely lethargic to the point I couldn’t function.

It did help with the sickness but I found that really difficult as I have other children. I found ondansetron worked the best for me although it was really difficult to get someone to prescribe it and the consultant did in the end. I had hyperemesis it lasted until around 18 weeks.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you so much for your replies, can I ask how bad your sickness was? And did it pass? @LBNM19 after 18 weeks did it all stop completely? In two minds to “ride it out” or take the medication. Thanks both

Mine was really bad I was either being sick or heaving. It was a really difficult time. I ended up being admitted to hospital at one point. Mine got better when I started the ondansetron then it stopped.

My dc are now 12 and 15. I had awful, excessive sickness (hyperemisis) in both pregnancies, and took many anti sickness drugs prescribed by both GP and hospital doctors. I don't think I had Xonvea, but I may have had it under a different name, or a non branded version. I had ondansetron, cyckizine, avomine, stemitil, metrochloptomide.... anyway. My dc are completely fine..

For me,it just turned off at 18 weeks. Just stopped with no ramping down, no additional treatment etc at all.

Pregnancy Sickness Support hade a lot of useful medical, emotional and legal support.

Fingers crossed you feel better soon.

It’s a first line drug which has been used for years in the USA and Canada. It’s basically an anti histamine and vitamin B6. It’s very safe.
I had to take odansetron as first line meds weren’t enough for me. I finally stopped being sick at 30 weeks and the nausea went after giving birth.

With my son I didn't have xonvea and was in hospital everyday for iv ondansatron and 3 bags of fluid plus metoclopromide from 7 weeks until 12 weeks when the hospital put me on home visits twice a day and steroid injection in my tummy as they just couldn't control the sickness along with iv ondansatron and fluids. I couldn't hold a sip of water down for 5mins and they didnt want to admit me. It was scary. It finally settled around 20 weeks and the tablet ondansatron and metoclopromide worked mostly. I was still being sick in labour but as soon as my placenta was out I felt so much better.
With my daughter I was on xonvea from 5 weeks pregnant after speaking to pregnancy sickness support and even with nausea I only vomited once and took ondansatron as well as and when needed but no hospital trips for fluids or iv medication.

@abbs1 could you share please when and how you stopped taking xonvea. Did you have to take 4 pills a day?

WeightoftheWorld · 12/04/2024 21:20

Ive been taking it since very soon after my positive test. I still have HG but this pregnancy has been my mildest yet (this is pregnancy 3), I was still mostly working until about week 10 when it all just got too much. I have very mild side effects from it but that's partly because I take another medication for different reasons that have a similar side effect profile so the two together I do notice the difference (drier eyes, drier mouth, very slightly lessened urge to pee). But it's all manageable and I have eye drops prescribed for me anyway as I have dry eyes anyway without the meds. I don't find it sedating and I take the max dose.

@abbs1 could you share please when and how you stopped taking xonvea. Did you have to take 4 pills a day?

So I started on 2 pills a day at 5 weeks pregnant but needed to up to 4 pills by 6 weeks as the nausea was bad. I stayed on 4 pills a day until around 30 weeks and then dropped back to 2 but the nausea got worse again so went back up to 4 after about a week being on 2 pills. I stayed on 4 until I had given birth at 38 weeks. Didn't find I needed to wean off them. Just stopped as soon as my daughter was born no side effects from what I remember.

GrumpySock · 12/04/2024 22:05

@abbs1 thank you so much for your reply! I think I will go up to 4 from tomorrow. Cannot work out when they kick in. My nausea is worse in the evening so the morning pill didn't last until tonight. I will try to add another at lunch. Hope it will work

That's ok. If it helps I was told to do 1 in the morning, 1 at lunch and 2 before bed. It can take up to 2 weeks to feel the full effect of the upped dose as it takes time to build up in your body so make sure you've got enough prescribed if your upping your dose.
How many weeks are you? I hope you feel better going up to 4. It definitely made a massive difference for me.

GrumpySock · 12/04/2024 22:54

@abbs1 14. With the last two pregnancies I felt ok by 17 so hope it is not long left.

Oh fingers crossed. I found these the hardest weeks.
I finally felt a better around 22 weeks.

Hiya, I'm almost 17 weeks and pregnant with twins. I've had horrible HG and have been on Xonvea since about 10 weeks - it's the only medicine that stops me from vomiting all day!
My GP was reluctant to prescribe me more tablets last week because it's "only meant to be taken for a short period of time". This troubled me as I don't want to take something that will harm my babies!
I've read a couple other threads about Xonvea and it looks like alot of us have been on it for quite some time and it seems to be okay.
Just wondering how long you were taking it? Has anyone been on it their entire pregnancy? If you stopped taking it, when did you stop?

I was on it from 5 weeks until I gave birth. I needed all 4 tablets a day up until 25-30 weeks and then was able to wean down to 2 a day until the day I gave birth.
Make sure you stick with it. Xonvea was honestly a life saver for me and the GP needs to put it on repeat for you.

It's licenced for use in pregnancy - specifically designed for pregnancy sickness.

I take the two before bed and one in the morning, I've not gone to four as 3 has got it to a manageable level and by the time I feel awful again it's almost bedtime! Mostly it's the needing to take it on an empty stomach I struggle with!

But.. life-changing as I can now function, but agree it does make me even more tired

When I took the 4 a day I couldn't always take it on an empty stomach but it worked amazingly well. Night and day difference in my pregnancies. If only I had known about it during my first pregnancy
