Waiting for NIPT results - 1/30 risk of DS

HI everyone,

First time poster so go easy on me!

I'm currently pregnant with my 2nd child, we had the 12 week scan last Wednesday and the sonographer told us everything looked fine. Got a call from the hospital on Monday to say the baby had a 1/30 chance of having Down Syndrome, and gave the testing options.

Initially I wanted to go for the amniocentesis to get a definitive answer but would have had to wait 1.5weeks to be 15wks pregnant. I had the NIPT test on Monday and was told the results would take 10-14 days.

I have questions for anyone who has been in a similar situation:

  1. How long did the NIPT results take?
  2. Even if you received a result of low risk did you still want the amniocentesis to get a yes/no answer?
  3. Did the waiting kill you as much as it is me?

For context- The NT measurement was 1.7mm, nasal bone was visible at scan, the midwife said my hormones looked vaguely 'normal', I'll be 35 by EDD, never smoked, BMI is 27. The midwife said she couldn't see anything alarming from my results so couldn't pinpoint what had given the high risk result.

I'm trying to be positive but I just can't be, and I feel like I've lost all excitement for the pregnancy which is just an awful feeling.
My mind is racing ahead to what my options are if I get a high risk result from the NIPT.
(I know children with down syndrome are beautiful and bring so much joy to families lives, but you're never going to wish hardship on your babies)

Thanks in advance ❤

Hey hun. Im currently 23+1 and pregnant with my first. I’ll be a month from 40 when I give birth. I had to have NIPT as they couldn’t measure the NT at my first scan and my quad bloods come back with different HG levels. I had my NIPT on the Tuesday AM and my results were back Monday lunchtime. I wait is absolutely horrendous I don’t think I’ve ever felt so low or so ill waiting for them. I just kept reading positive stories on here to keep me going. As they come back low risk I wasn’t offered the amnio and wouldn’t have had it as the NIPT is quite accurate 96/97% and the amnio carries a 1 in 200 risk of miscarriage.
Try to keep reading positive outcomes. I know how hard it is waiting, I had to take a week off work I was beside myself. But make sure you are looking after yourself too, hopefully you get good results tomorrow so you can enjoy the weekend and relax x

Really appreciate your reply @AimeeLou84 .
I've been reading through previous threads on here and generally trying to distract myself!
The midwife did say the amnio would be available either way, it's balancing the risk of me continuing to worry as I don't have a 100% definitive answer with the risk of miscarriage....
Fingers crossed for the results in the next few days x

Hi there

My story is a bit different, I had a very high 8mm NT and really i knew there and then in my heart that it was unlikely to be ok. My risk came back as 1 in 8 for T21, and 1 in 5 for T13/18. I couldn't have the NIPT for another 6 days due to the days it is available in my region. I had the test on the Tuesday and got my results by the following Monday lunchtime.

The result came back high risk for T18 (Edwards Syndrome).

I had a Fetal Medicine appt the following day, where I was meant to have a CVS, However, they agreed that baby was very unwell and unlikely to survive regardless. I knew the NIPT was unlikely to be wrong for a high risk result. I couldn't put myself through another week of limbo when it wasn't going to change the outcome.

It was a very tough time for us but we came though it. I am now 7 weeks pregnant again, 5 months later. I am about to go through all the testing again, NIPT in 3 weeks and then a CVS if I want it, regardless of the result from the NIPT. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Please come back and let us know how you get on.
