How accurate was your dating scan? Just had a scan and pushed me back 2 more weeks...

Hi everyone. I am interested to know how accurate the dates given to you at your dating scan were. I know that babies arrive when they want to (understatement) but at least a dating scan should give you an idea of the fortnight or so that they are due to arrive.

I was sure that I was in my 15th week this week, based on activity (!), periods and symptoms, however my fantastic wonderful scan yesterday (where my baby was jumping around and kicking away!!) the sonographer said I was only just 13 weeks.

I had a MW old fashioned exam 2 weeks ago that said I was 13 or 14 weeks - matching up with what I know. Yeah, it is only two weeks, but I am very very impatient!!

Where your scans anywhere near accurate? Did you agree with it?

Mine was about ten days out with DD but she arrived ten days early, so I was right

With my first DS scan put me back by 2 weeks and baby was then 2 weeks overdue from scan date. However, I do wonder if the scan date was accurate as he was 11lb7oz when finally arrived and has been at least a month ahead developmentally all the way along.

Wow, fleximum, big baby! I was wondering if the LO could just be a little small, but apparently all babies are the same - which I can't believe, cos if they were they would all be born the same! And as my DB has two sons who had a weight difference of more than 4lbs between them, this doesn't make sense.

Did you have your DS naturally or induced etc? We joked that the SIL was pg for 10 months - sounds terrifying!

AKA - so your dates were right and scan out by two weeksish. That makes sense. A colleague, who had a scan a few weeks ago, was also pushed back by two weeks as well. Thanks

I was convinced I was about 12 weeks when I found out I was pg with dc3.
When I was sent for an early scan they put me at 7 weeks.

I went 1 week over.

So the jurys out for me.
Still not sure.
And they say the earlier the scan the more accurate it is.

My first 12 week scan put me back to 10 weeks, but when I went in again 2 weeks later, they put me forward to 13 weeks - so it can change over just 2 weeks! It all seems a bit random to me.

DC's 2 & 3 both arrived on their due dates, DS1 was a week early.

Flamesparrow · 27/03/2008 10:27

Mine was crap.

I knew exactly when DD was conceived (what with only having unprotected sex the once). I knew I was 12 weeks, they said 8. The midwife had found a heartbeat with the doppler before the scan , but they would not believe me.

DD was always a month further ahead of herself although she was born to term by their dates (and I was very ill after the birth, i think due to old placenta)

HappyNewMum2Be · 27/03/2008 10:37

One of the reasons it concerns me is that the scan date is what they work to for all your other scheduled treatments. Even when I argued that I too knew when I conceived, the hospital mw disagreed. hey ho.

Ended up having emergency caesarian with DS after he had slowing heart rate on CTG but very glad as I can't see how anyone that big could have come out through the usual exit! From my experience, there is no point in arguing as every MW and obstetrician I saw just maintained that scan dates are more accurate. Even after my whale baby was born, they still refused to accept that my dates might have been more accurate than theirs. The only real impact changing your dates will have is in when they induce if you go overdue. Having the other scan and reviews at slightly the wrong time will not do any harm.

I have been given 4 dates so far all between 17th and 28th June!
