im leaking fluid and there are "notches" on blood flow to baby from placenta

i had what was meant to be a routine antenatal appt yesterday (at 22weeks). While i was there i mentioned that i felt like i was leaking. i then had an internal exam and she confirmed that i was. then had a scan, they said fluid levels were low but that they were ok at the moment. during the scan she also checked the blood flow. from me to placenta its fine, from placenta to baby there are "notches". apparently this means that its not flowing as smooth as it should be
i'm trying not to worry, baby's kicking and seems active so thats comforting but apart from being given antibiotics i havent been given any advice about what i should be doing. i've done some reading tonight and apparently drinking lots of water will help replenish fluids. sonographer said that taking asprin would help with the blood flow but the registrar said it wasn't necessary

i've tried all day to speak to my midwife but all i've managed to do is leave lots of messages on an answer phone.

has anyone been in a similar situation? the leaking seems to have slowed down a bit but i still haven't been able to find out anymore about the notches other than its a reduced blood flow to baby.

sorry don't have any experience or advice, just supportive (((hugs))). keep up the pressure on the midwife - but they are obviously pretty relaxed which is reassuring

thanks missing. i guess you're right about them being relaxed but i'm wondering whether they're just so busy that they just don't have time to talk to me. someone giving birth is more of an urgent case than me!

No advice to offer but you really need to speak to mw or at least registrar level at hospital. Sonographer is not an expert in pregnancy. Make a list of questions you want answered when you do speak to appropriate person so that you don't come away from the situation no better off than you are now. It may be that there is no evidence based advice to give about the situation and they will take a wait and see approach. I would have thought making your next appointment and advice on what to look out for in the meantime would be the minimum. Good luck.

i'm tempted to just go to the hospital tomorrow and camp there until a midwife will answer my questions! I realise now that i should have asked alot more questions about it all when i saw the registrar yesterday but i was there on my own and it was so much to take in.

justjules.. can i ask you more about the aspirin? how did they pick up that you needed it?

they sound like placental lakes?? I have about 4 of these on my placenta - basically pools of blood, leaving a smaller exchange site than normal. your placenta will make up for this and its no problem. Im 38 weeks now and baby normal size.

is the fluid still leaking now?

drinking lots of water can help, but if you have leaking fluid at this early stage, you need more reassurance than this

i would be tempted to call labour ward and speak to someone and ask to come in and be reassured/ examined have things explained to you tonight or tomorrow.. i cannot imgaine you are going to get much sleep

you should not have been given this sort of information and then left to it

ask to see a consultant obstetrician immediately, i think this would classify you as high risk ( for now at least )

i doubt your membranes have fully ruptured, as you would have been kept it, but leaking needs monitoring

I did call the labour ward.. they said they'd call me back (6hours ago)

the leaking does seem to have reduced alot, i'm wondering whether this is because i've rested today

they've prescribed me erythromycin. they're apparently to stop me getting any infections. i seem to be on double the usual dose for 10days (2x250mg tablets 4 times a day)

all i know about the blood flow is that the blood from me to placenta is fine but from placenta to baby its not as smooth as it could be (they saw "notches" on the read out)

if you are still leaking, you should call again

put a pad on, not a dry weave one, and see how damp/ wet it is after an hour
