Are midwife booking in sessions usually on the phone?

I am just coming up for 11 weeks and have only just heard from the midwife, she's arranging a booking in phone appointment for tomorrow morning and said she'll look into getting bloods and a scan booked.
I expected to go and see the midwife but I suppose it's not the end of the world.

Also will she arrange a scan date at a convenient time with me on the phone or will I get one at random through the post?

I'd just like to know what to expect really because I'm feeling a bit nervous.
I was also hoping to have a scan before Easter so we can share the news when we see family.

The booking appointment can be by phone, it's just answering a million questions. Mine was in the surgery but my blood tests etc were done at a different time.

Getting your scan appointments are different in every area, in Edinburgh my scans were booked on the phone for me when I was 4 weeks but this time I'm in Aberdeen and I just got a letter through the post a week after my booking appointment

I had a booking appointment in the phone this time (2022) and went in only for bloods and weighing etc. I found this better than with my first when we did it in person (2017). Both times the letter just came through with date/time for 12 week and 20 week scans. Try also did bloods at 12 week scan and offered a whooping cough vaccine at 20 weeks. When I had extra scan the midwife booked me in and checked if I could do those dates, those were usually in the next couple of days though.

My booking in appointments have all been in person with weight, urine, bloods etc all done at the same time. Takes hours! They book the scan while I'm there but I have no say, you get what you're given and cant really change it

Mine was in person with my partner as they ask him questions about health too. Might as well have been on the phone though as I went back a couple of weeks later for urine sample, bloods etc I just got a letter in the post with my 12 and 20 week scans. If the date/time doesn’t suit you can ring up and see if it can be moved but they might not be able to.

It all depends on where you live, I phoned to self refer and was given dates for my in-person booking in appointment and 12 week scan on that call. My sister lives in the next health board, had her booking in on the phone and only received her 12 week scan appointment the week before.

You could book a private scan if you're wanting to tell family on a certain date?

findingclarity · 13/03/2024 11:49

I did have a private scan, well 2 actually one at 6 and then 9 weeks and there's a good strong heartbeat.
There's something about the 12 week scan though that feels more official, with a definite due date and having reached the 12 week point where we can tell everyone.

I think it depends on your individual maternity unit. Mine was done on phone. In fact all my appointment with maternity have been done on phone

Overthebow · 13/03/2024 14:41

You’ll likely just be given date for the scan, it can be anytime up to 14 weeks if you want the screening done.

CluelessInLondon · 13/03/2024 14:47

It's definitely really variable by area and by hospital. My booking in appointment was done at just over 9 weeks in person, and they did the whole lot - urine dip, weighing, bloods etc. The rest of my midwife appointments will be with the community midwifery team at my local GP practice.

I already had my 12 week scan booked before my booking in appointment (and was able to change it as they originally booked me for a date when I'm away on holiday). I haven't had the 12 week scan yet but got an alert from the hospital's patient portal earlier this week confirming the date for my 20 week scan - feels a bit surreal having that one in the diary when I haven't had the dating scan yet!

Rosesanddaisies1 · 13/03/2024 14:55

I got letter with scan date/time. My booking appointment was in person, but I did the questionnaire online before. just tell your family! I hate the whole wait till 12 weeks thing, it's misogynistic, it implies miscarriage is shameful or should be kept secret.

Mrsttcno1 · 13/03/2024 14:57

My booking appointment was in person but I know both of my close friends had theirs done by phone so I think it just depends. It’s literally just a load of yes/no questions anyway so makes no real difference.

The scans you just get a letter through the post with a date & time, I asked about this early in this pregnancy and was told the reason they just allocate them is because by law your employer has to give you the time to attend pregnancy appointments so there should never be an issue attending unless obviously you are on holiday x

I'm interested in this too, waiting for a scan, is it usually before or after 12 weeks?

It just totally depends on availability in your area, although people call it the “12 week scan”, it’s actually called your “dating scan” and it just has to be done between 11 and 14 weeks. I’m nearly 8 months pregnant now and mine was done at 13 weeks 3 days x

My booking was in person, but then I had to book a second appointment for bloods etc so seemed a bit of a waste of time & could have easily been done on the phone! My scan appointment came through the post a few days later. The letter had a phone number so you could phone to reschedule if required.
