What are the chances for pregnancy (normal/ectopic) to be missed during transvaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks if it was just a regular visit for different issues and possibility of pregnancy wasn't discussed.

Share your stories if you've got any.

I'd think virtually nil for an intrauterine pregnancy if they are looking at the uterus.
For a fallopian ectopic, the same if they are looking at the tubes.
For a pregnancy of unknown location, they wouldn't necessarily spot it I would think.

YouveGotAFastCar · 13/03/2024 11:11

There isn’t much of one. Even at four weeks, the pregnancy can be seen, even though the heartbeat often can’t be fully seen yet.

Are you okay?

Delphina17 · 13/03/2024 11:15

Why were you having a transvaginal scan? I suppose it may depend of they weren't actually looking at the uterus. Why didn't you tell them you were pregnant?

Bentoforthehorde · 13/03/2024 11:18

If they were looking in your uterus I'd say very, very unlikely.
But if they were looking at say your intestines, possibly?
I've had a few trans vaginal scans for various things and they don't always talk to you about what they have found at the time, but if they saw a pregnancy I would imagine they mention it.

I'd like to thank all of you for the answers.❤️ @Okayornot @Bentoforthehorde @Delphina17 @YouveGotAFastCar

Long story short I've been having alot of pregnancy symptoms for the past 2 months now and no normal period, unusual discharge too... I didn't however take a pregnancy test, which yess it's not anybody's else fault but mine. I should have. At least that would give me a clearer picture of what actually is going on. I did however have a bleeding which was completely different to my period... so I'm unsure whether it was MC, or it's just something wrong with my reproductive organs. I've also been feeling unwell and I got scared of it being ectopic. It's the last thing I'd want right now... there was also alot of protein found in my urine when I got tested which is very weird... Anyways I booked an abdominal ultrasound and hopefully they'll figure what is wrong. I hope nothing too serious... I'm so sorry for bothering you. ❤️

No problem at all and hope you will feel better soon. Can you do a pregnancy test now? If it was an ectopic it would still show up as positive.

Hope they find out what's wrong and get well soon!

butterflywingss · 14/03/2024 01:07

If you are definitely confirmed 8 weeks then that should show up. When I had my ectopic I was very early and they did the same method and were able to see a shadow like of where my pregnancy was. With my last pregnancy I thought I was 9 weeks and when they did a scan they couldn't see anything and I got worried so blood tests definitely confirmed but my dates were clearly wrong.

Thank you. I also do hope for this mystery to finally resolve, cause last time my GP found nothing. She had no idea what the cause for my issues was and she kind of didn't take me seriously either. Healthy I sure ain't, I've been having quite disturbing issues.

My issues last month were:

At the time of period - light spotting in dark brown color, lasting 2 days... (never had this before)

I also felt nausea and cramping

Then soon after that breast swelled up and got sore for weeks, I also had fatigue, frequent urination, moodyness, vaginal discharge, cramping but it was weird I felt so uncomfortable laying/sitting in certain positions. Clothes felt too tight I literally had to wear very loose things, night sweats, temperature rise but no fever, and protein in urine.

Then at around 8w (if i was even pregnant) ... I had firstly pink watery spotting that turned into bleeding but it wasn't like super heavy... it did have clots and it was completely diff from my usual bleeding in terms of color, consistency, it was really UNUSUAL that I started to seriously worry. The interesting part after passing clots, I felt pain relief... So I went for an ultrasound cause I was seriously worried, I was so nervous and afraid what I was gonna hear from a doctor but she found nothing. Now possibility is that this was a MC, however next week I did start feeling nauseous ALOT and no apetite, fatigue so I went to GP again and they found even more protein in my urine. Results were not good. I got some antibiotics for UTI, but that didn't help much as now cramping returned but this time the cramping is more like pre period like except it comes in waves and I've been feeling it for 2 weeks... which is weird. I also have seen alot of EWCM consistently for 2 weeks and increased discharge, nausea, fatigue, hot temperature, sweats, frequent urination, but no fever. I'm going for abdominal ultrasound tomorrow, gotta see why I got so much protein in urine, is my kidneys/bladder ok, and also reproductive organs. I have no idea what is going on, I'm just sad my GP found no cause... I've never had such issues before, I sincerely hope it's nothing serious... @Delphina17

When you had ectopic, did you have any symptoms or you just went for a regular ultrasound to confirm pregnancy? Did you know you were pregnant or they just found it randomly?

and about your normal pregnancy, what was the cause of dates being wrong? Was it that you ovulated late that month or you just conceived another month? How far along were you actually? did it all turn well for you? ❤️ @butterflywingss

I can’t believe you’ve seen a GP several times, booked a scan but at no point bothered to take a test. I’m not sure what else you expected from a GP, she’s obviously done urine samples and given some generic treatment. A GP can not see inside your body, they refer you on if the first line treatment doesn’t treat the problem.

Seagrassbasket · 14/03/2024 07:10

Do a pregnancy test love and go from there. All the best

Okayornot · 14/03/2024 07:32

OP, you seem to be getting yourself a bit worked up about a possible pregnancy, but it is really simple to find out if you are pregnant by taking a test. It would show a positive at 8 weeks.
If you were pregnant and have miscarried there is no way of confirming that.
Protein in your urine suggests a kidney problem, not pregnancy. Kidney issues can mean nausea, sweats, vomiting, fatigue and increased urination.

Really, just take a test and if it is negative go back to the GP and discuss the discomfort you are in and whether there might be something wrong with your kidneys.

Edited

With my ectopic pregnancy I had planned to get pregnant so I was constantly testing, and I had a positive pregnancy test. However, it got lighter and then I started bleeding very heavily and I called my GP to explain my symptoms, and that I had a confirmed pregnancy test and I went to EPU at hospital and they confirmed when they couldn't see anything in my uterus but they could see something in my right tube area but my ectopic luckily resolved itself and I didn't need any further treatment. I had also had a miscarriage prior to my ectopic and the same thing happened, had a positive test and then a few days later I started bleeding. With both those pregnancies I had an 'implantation bleed' and then lost both.

With my two successful pregnancies I didn't have any implantation bleed whatsoever but my last pregnancy I actually tracked to get pregnant using the clear blue ovulation sticks and so I had been calculating my days from my last period to the day I got my peak but for some reason the dates still didn't add up and where I thought I was 9 weeks I was 4-5 weeks hence why they could only see my uterus line thickening. Maybe because I have irregular periods I am really not sure because I know the day I ovulated as that was my peak day based on the test.

I would definitely take a test and let's say you did have some sort of miscarriage I think if it was very very recent you may still have HCG levels to show anything. Hope that helps xx

Revelatio · 14/03/2024 07:48

If you were pregnant they would definitely have seen it on the ultrasound. It’s possible, but not definite they would see an ectopic. If you think it’s an ectopic, the simplest way is to do a test as it would show up.

Your consultant/doctor/person doing the scan should have definitely asked you if you were pregnant. They literally ask anyone of childbearing age this for every procedure!

Revelatio · 14/03/2024 07:50

Did they do any other tests? It sounds like you have an infection.

QueSyrahSyrah · 14/03/2024 07:58

I can't fathom why a) you haven't taken a pregnancy test and/or b) mentioned the fact you suspect pregnancy to your GP or the HCP who did the scan? Your story rings a bell though, have you posted about it before over the past couple of months? I hope you get to the bottom of it soon, but you need to speak up!

MrBigsCat · 14/03/2024 08:05

Please don’t give up till you get some answers for this op, it doesn’t sound right, as other said I’d be thinking more infection rather than an ectopic

You did post about almost exactly the same thing 3 weeks ago, but in that scenario you spoke as if you were confirmed pregnant. What's going on OP?

Indeed, if the GP is dipping urine to test for protein I'd be surprised if they wouldn't also test for HCG at the same time (if not infection as well).

ExpertNutritionalistAndBestSellingAuthor · 14/03/2024 08:43

This is the area I work in. A pregnancy of 8 weeks would be seen on a transvaginal pelvic ultrasound. There are many other things that can cause your symptoms, including natural changes to the body/cycle. Protein in your urine could be signs of UTI, kidney infection, kidneys stones, hypertension, some types of arthritis, inflammation of the bladder etc etc. I'm afraid pregnancy is unlikely.

Well she did a pap test and found strep b and ocoli bacteria and I had the treatment but as I've said it didn't really solve my issues so I'm guessing this bacterias were just a side issue next to the main one...however yes I do agree I should have taken a test or at least been more responsible and went to a doctor earlier. It was all new to me and I assumed at first that it was just hormonal imbalance and that it would resolve within next period. I know better now. ❤️ @FawnFrenchieMum

You are absolutely right, I did learn from this experience that I've been putting myself through unnecessary stress and health risk checking google when I could have just taken a test and went to a doctor when I noticed something was wrong.Thankfully symptoms didn't get worse. Ps I had kidney infection before and I had completely diff issues + it progressed quite quickly so I ended up in a hospital that time. It however could be a different kind of kidney issue or uti... I hope the ultrasound tomorrow shows up something, I'll update yall.❤️ @Seagrassbasket @Okayornot

@Revelatio I agree ❤️ but there was literally no talks about it...The check up really seemed like something in a rush that is why I never got any proper diagnosis. And yeah it was my bad as well that I didn't speak for myself and share my concerns what I'm worried about. It was immature of me but I was really scared expecting to hear something bad, I was shaking and I'm usually never afraid. However yeah it is what it is, I know I'll do better next time...❤️ @CheeseWisely I haven't really been posting on here, except once (about few weeks ago). Nope that must of been a misunderstanding or my post was unclear. The truth is I've never checked (which I know is irresponsible of me).

@MrBigsCat Thank you so much! ❤️ This gives me hope. I can't explain how much it sucks to be experiencing health issues and be uncertain. She didn't find any abnormalities on the ultrasound few weeks ago but she also was in a rush and wasn't paying that much attention. Hopefully abdominal scan shows up something so I can get proper treatment. You are right, perhaps it is some kind of infection... however I doubt it's kidney though cause I don't have any pain around there... I have more likely a vaginal pain (something inside)... I'll update you once I find out what the issue is. ❤️

@Okayornot nope, they haven't checked for my pregnancy... they've only did a basic urine test, the regular one since no pregnancy was suspected. I still believe they should have done a more detailed uricult test so it could of shown more information why there is protein in my urine... but anyways I might find out tomorrow... Something definitely has to show up, organ enlargement or something... I'll be really disappointed if I go home without a diagnosis again. 🙁

Woah I'm so sorry you had two bad experiences. ❤️ but on a brighter side at least during ectopic you did not need a surgery. I must say you were very responsible, much more than me that you've checked on your body and found an issue early on. And about that normal pregnancy that you've mentioned... don't they count gestation age from the day of the LMP? but you are right everyone is different, some women ovulate always at the same time, while others are more irregular. How long are your cycles usually? I'm glad however that everything went well for you and both of your lovely babies. ❤️❤️❤️ @butterflywingss

Have you actually done a pregnancy test at any point? It is extremely likely the GP would have tested at the very least as woman of child bearing age with those symptoms would be always highly on the radar for pregnancy!
