Ate cold tinned anchovies but now worried? Are they OK?

I ordered pizza with anchovies and they came uncooked on top- I googled and found a website saying tinned anchovies are fine uncooked due to salt, so ate them, but have just remembered the nhs says not to eat cured fish and I don't know if tinned anchovies count? I'm 31 weeks and have been v careful so far, every time I've eaten anchovies on pizza it's been cooked but now I'm having a mini panic about listeria- can anyone reassure me?

It will be completely fine, they're just fish.

Absolutely fine. No need to worry.

I'm confused, why would they be uncooked on a pizza? Surely the pizza was cooked therefore the anchovies would be cooked too?

Bumblingonby · 12/03/2024 16:39

Weirdly the pizza was hot but the anchovies were just sort of tepid and they hadn't broken down the way they usually do when cooked, so I assume they were added after, with the fresh basil. They definitely weren't cooked through (this was at Franco manca). I regret eating them now as its made me worry but it was a work lunch with time pressure and I didn't want to make a fuss so I just did a quick Google and decided it was probably OK...

But uncooked cured fish is a risk, isn't it?

I originally went with this from babyfacts.com but am now second guessing! I should chill though right? There's nothing I can do now anyway...

They may not have been broken down but I'm sure they will have been cured somehow.

Anything in a tin is effectively cooked /sterilised as part of the canning process, op.
They’re fine.

Bumblingonby · 12/03/2024 16:53

So according to nhs you're not supposed to eat uncooked fish even if it is cured as its still a risk. But the screenshot above (which I think is american🤷‍♀️ so maybe different rules) seems to indicate that anchovies are cured with so much salt they're ok?

Tbh it's done now, there's nothing you can do and it will be fine. Think of all the countries where they eat raw fish.
