Diarrhea in very early pregnancy?

Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me if diarrhea in very early pregnancy can be normal/OK? I’m very very early, got a positive test on Tuesday morning and will be 4 weeks from my LMP on Saturday.

I’d say it’s more ‘loose stool’ than full-on diarrhea? Like there’s still a shape to it, it’s not totally liquid (sorry!), it’s just not as solid as normal. There’s no pain when I go either.

I was pregnant last year but it ended in MMC at 13 weeks, but I had constipation with that pregnancy which I gather is much more usual! I’ve also scared myself by googling and seen that it can be a symptom of an ectopic pregnancy?

Can anyone advise/reassure me? Did this happen to you and was everything OK? I think the MMC is making me more worried than I’ve have been otherwise.

TIA x

I’ve had this in 2 pregnancies (including current one), both times at around 5 weeks for a week or so. I did ultimately lose one of them much later, but don’t believe this was any early indication of a problem. Current pregnancy is still going at 21 weeks.

Lots of poop issues when pregnant, I'd say keep hydrated and call surgery / midwife for advice if it goes on or gets worse.
Good luck!

Yes I had this in all pregnancies. It worried me because most of what you read online mentions constipation and I was the opposite!

I had a MMC first pregnancy, then two very straightforward and healthy pregnancies within 3 years. It’s really nerve wracking being pregnant after an MMC and hard not to over think things- I’ve been there. It’s a well known fact that nerves can also play havoc with your bowels.

Try to relax as best you can and take each day- and symptom- as it comes. Wishing you all the best x

Ut was one of first signs i was pregnant with bith mine, that was before early testing

Yep. Embarrassed to say this is what first prompted me to test. I just knew something was off and it couldn’t have been anything I’d eaten. Unplanned pregnancy and 2-3 days before period was even late. So yeah, diarrhea made me suspicious.

Thanks so much, everyone, that’s really reassuring 🙏🏼 I’ve been a bit worried because I thought it usually went the other way, so thank you for sharing your experiences! I agree that pregnancy after a MMC or any kind of loss is its own special crazy-making thing - I’m already second-guessing everything my body does and doesn’t do 😣🤪

thank you again 🤗

I had this too with my second pregnancy (currently 11w6d). I told my partner and he said ‘are you sure you’re not pregnant?’ As he remembered I had this with our son. This was around 3-5 weeks!

Sara1988 · 07/03/2024 21:24

I had horrendous diarrhea for four days at the beginning. Googled diarrhea early pregnancy and the next word that came up was miscarriage... so I was freaking out big time. Turns out I was worried for nothing. Now 10 weeks

Tummy problems are very common, both ways in early pregnancy. It's lots to do with progesterone increasing.

TheLurpackYears · 07/03/2024 21:30

Goodness me yes, and then the other way soon enough. Keep your fluids up, your body will be increasing it's blood volume massively. Good luck.

WeightoftheWorld · 09/03/2024 15:42

Yes I had this too with this pregnancy. I don't remember having it with my first or second pregnancy but perhaps I just don't remember to be fair.

I'm getting this too and I just read that it can be caused by pre natal vitamins, so I'm going to stop those for a couple of days see if it helps.
