First trimester insomnia

I'm only in my fifth week but I have been really struggling with sleep insomnia. At night I just toss and turn and can't get to sleep at all - or only for an hour or so at a time. Sometimes in the day this continues and I struggle to even nap. I am taking progesterone pessaries (cyclogest) due to previous recurrent miscarriage but I've taken this with my son's pregnancy and slept just fine. I'm worried reading online that sleep deprivation can negatively impact baby. Has anyone else had this problem so early on in pregnancy and the baby has been just fine? I used to take magnesium supplements before bed and I may start that up again

I had this around 5 weeks. It's eased now and I'm 9 weeks (but still waking every two hours to pee.) I used to get insomnia during menstrual cycle so I assume it's hormone related.

I'm having similar but I'm waking up in the middle of the night, struggling to get back to sleep then waking up early for the day. Last night it was 4am then 6am, night before it was 1.30 then 5.30, night before was 2 then 6 etc. Joining for ideas or advice!

It's so frustrating isn't it! I just hope it's not harming the baby in any way :( I've been told I can take magnesium. I used to take 100mg daily pre-pregnancy. Last night I tried taking 50mg to be more cautious which seemed to help for a couple of hours - might look at increasing it to 100mg

I had this in both pregnancies but it was considerably worse with my first. It probably only lasted 2 weeks or so where it felt like I just didn’t sleep at all, but it definitely didn’t do DC any harm!

@OopsieeDaisy ah that's a relief to know baby was well! Did you have this problem in your first trimester? Glad to hear it didn't last too long- bet that felt like a long 2 weeks though!

Oh yes, I meant to say it was in the first trimester both times! Later on I’ve never had any struggles sleeping, wake up more for a wee but go straight back to sleep. Hope it doesn’t last too much longer for you!

Hi I'm currently suffering from the severe insomnia just wanted to check did it get better in second trimester

Cosmos24 · 10/11/2024 07:53

I had it a lot in first trimester, now 17 weeks and it is better but some nights struggle and some nights sleep really well, so I think it does improve but it’s not 100% better, if that helps!

I know this is an old post but to answer your question, yes it got better the further i got into the second trimester.
I had it terrible at the beginning and was lucky to get a couple of hours a night, now I'm 20 weeks and I'm sleeping right through (although waking up early).
Not sure exactly when it stopped but it was probably 2 or 3 weeks ago
