Cervical Ectropian

Hello, I'm currently 8 weeks pregnant and have been having brown spotting with the occasional red for the past 8 days. I had an early scan with EPU last weds and all was OK but was measuring a week behind. They said to call back if cramping/spotting persisted which it has. After a slightly bigger bleed on Thursday I was sure I was going to miscarry over the weekend, but nothing. Just a lot more brown spotting.

Called EPU today and she said she isn't concerned and she thinks it could be a cervical ectropian, they could do a speculum if I want but only way to really know if baby is OK is to scan which they said I don't need as all was OK on weds... typically about an hour after the call i had a loose bowel movement and had red blood definitely vaginal bleeding as i checked with the tissue several times. Have just been for a wee and no blood now. So basically, from my ramblings, I just want to know if anyone has experience of this?

It's so hard not to panic!

Hello congrats on your pregnancy!
I have experienced this-
first trimester I have brown discharge and some red blood after BM defo from vagina during 6,8,9 weeks, Scanned at 6,8 weeks all ok.
I thought it was because I was on progestogen and causing sensitive cervix.
I am now 24 weeks and from 21 weeks I had some more Red spotting And wasnt till a speculum examination on these occasions they said i have cervical ectropian. So I’m thinking that’s what caused the bleeds in first trimester.
May be worth asking if GP can do the speculum examination for a peace of mind!
sending lots of hope xxxx

Hello, thank you! Congrats to you too 😊

Ah that's great to hear thank you! It is so nerve wracking. My cramps are quite strong this morning and back ache has kicked in, which I know is normal for this stage but when you tie it in with the cramps and blood it's just worrying! I still have my normal symptoms but also know that sometimes doesn't mean anything.

I just had another wee and there was a little bit on the tissue. I think it was brown, nut sometimes hard to distinguish between pale pink and pale brown when it's so light! I am with my midwife tomorrow for bloods so will see if she can help get me booked in for a speculum, at least that might put my mind at ease.

Must have bee such a fright seeing the spotting again at 21 weeks! Great you have answers now. I think if I'm lucky enough to continue this pregnancy, I will be a bag of nerves the whole way through haha! Xxx

I have a cervical ectropion and it was only discovered by a speculum too. I bled and spotted in the 2nd trimester and it was over the holidays and didn’t find out until the 2nd day into the new year. Usually something needs to trigger it, I noticed scans did, or if the midwife was abit rough with finding the measurements or after sex.

It’s super nerve wracking but definitely get them to check and request a scan for peace of mind too.

Good luck

They can only diagnose an ectropian by seeing one on speculum, so I think it’s irresponsible of her to suggest that that is the cause of the bleeding

@theprincessthepea my spotting is all the time, it doesn't go on a liner but every time I wipe its brown. The blood has happened 3 times, twice from a bowel movement and once last week I just had a strong cramp and then blood which was very worrying! I'm going to ask my midwife tomorrow if she can get me booked in for a speculum examination.

@chickpeapie I'm assuming she's just taken a guess based on what ive said and the fact my scan didnt show any reason for it. But you're right, not really wise to say it is that without knowing, as it has gotten my hopes up after me thinking this was sure signs a mc was imminenet. She did offer me to go into triage to get it done but as I'm seeing my midwife tomorrow thought I could just hold off for her advice. I'm hoping it is that though is its really nerve wracking seeing the brown all the time and even worse when it's red! This past week has been incredibly stressful with it all

actually, having said that, I had a private scan last sat, and the brown spotting started on the Sunday. And then I had the EPU scan on the weds, and I had the crampy bleed on the Thurs. I wonder if there is a correlation there
