Did anyone NOT get HG with a subsequent pregnancy?

I'm a long time poster, I've just NC'd for this.

Please don't reply saying that you did get it - I know recurrence rates are very high, I've had two HG pregnancies already.

However, I'm just about 6 weeks with DC3 and not remotely sick. I have absolutely no nausea and haven't vomited at all. At this point in both my previous pregnancies I was full on into HG territory, with permanent nausea and vomiting many times a day and off work sick.

I did start medication even earlier this time than last time, and I'm taking Xonvea which I'd never tried before. I've been on the lowest dose of this for a few weeks now as a pre-emptive medication and obviously don't need to increase it given I feel fine sickness-wise. I am also taking amitripyline this time around for an unrelated reason, but I read that this is used to treat cyclical vomiting syndrome so I'm wondering whether this may actually also be helping me.

I am however really worried that the lack of sickness means that something is wrong and that this pregnancy won't have a happy outcome. So would really appreciate hearing from anyone who didn't have HG in any subsequent pregnancy and what the outcome was? Thank you.

I had HG with my first

im also currently almost 6 weeks pregnant and no vomiting as of yet. I’ve definitely felt queasy for sure but that’s all, I’m praying it stays away

im expecting it though 😔

Lijay · 22/02/2024 14:49

Not quite the same way round but I didn't have it with my first. Didn't really have any symptoms at all. I was one of those annoying women that blossomed and craved... Fruit.

Second time karma has come for me though and I have HG pretty bad. I'm also on xonvea max dose, one in the morning, afternoon and 2 at bedtime and it's just about keeping it a bay. So it possible to have 2 completely different pregnancies.

I hope you don't start feeling worse. There is good evidence that pre-emptive medication improves outcomes though so if I were you I'd be straight at the GP getting on medication. Which is what I have done myself and so far feel fine so fingers crossed.

I had HG with my first and even worse with my second (hospitalised with dehydration from so much vomiting at 6 weeks). But my third pregnancy was much better! I didn't feel great but not HG - more just a bit nauseous than loads of vomiting and felt generally ok until about 9-10 weeks. I did loads of research when I found out I was pregnant and ended up taking plenty of vitamin B6 as I'd read that that could help, so maybe it was that, maybe not. All babies same gender! I hope you carry on feeling ok. I was fully expecting my third to be even worse but was pleasantly surprised!

mimimamma · 22/02/2024 14:59

Also with my first and second I needed meds (metaclopramide & zofran), and iv drips for rehydration but didn't need any of that with the third 🙏🏻

mimimamma · 22/02/2024 15:26

Sorry one more! I was also worried about the pregnancy early on as I wasn't feeling sick but I now have a very healthy 5 month old Smile

DismantleMe · 22/02/2024 16:19

I had the same worries. My second pregnancy I could count on my hands how many times, I was convinced something was wrong but he's now 10 and I wish I'd just enjoyed an easier pregnancy, easy said now!

AimeeLou84 · 22/02/2024 17:00

Hey. I’m currently 19+1 with my first and haven’t had sickness once. Reading some of the stories on here I feel extremely lucky

WhyamInotvomiting · 22/02/2024 19:49

So helpful to hear positive stories from a few of you who had HG before etc thank you so much for sharing. Keep them coming and in the meantime I will try my best to chill and just enjoy the fact that I can eat, work, and take care of my kids rather than being bed-bound like the last two times!

had HG with my first, including no medication working and being hospitalised a few times due to dehydration.

dc2 - not even a hint of HG. Just run of the mill morning sickness but obviously nothing remotely like HG.

both same gender, but 5 years apart and the only real difference I can think of is with dc1 I was morbidly obese and at least 7 stone heavier than with my second dc. I was still fully expecting to get HG the second time around and was so over the moon that I didn’t.

abbs1 · 22/02/2024 19:58

I had HG very badly with my first but was put on Xonvea from 5 weeks pregnant with my 2nd as a preventive option to try and keep me out of hospital. I started feeling nauseas around 7 weeks so upped the xonvea to full dose. I still had waves of nausea but only vomited once throughout the pregnancy. It definitely helped a lot. I had a boy first girl 2nd so no idea if that had anything to do with it.
Wishing you the best of luck OP and hope you stay HG free.

I spoke too soon - I started feeling awful last night and from 2am this morning I was up retching. This morning I started to vomit 😞 I rang the drs and after reviewing my history they’ve prescribed anti sickness again but in my head there’s something saying oh you don’t need it yet you’ve only been sick twice. What would you do?

how’re you feeling?

Take the medication! I was told if you get on top of it straight away you will suffer less than if you let full blown HG take effect its much harder to get the symptoms under control.

Mumaway · 23/02/2024 18:45

Vommed from about 2 weeks to delivery with DC1, issues with weight loss and dehydration. DC2, nothing at all,.so had assumed problems and different sex. All was fine, and both girls.

hiredandsqueak · 23/02/2024 19:13

I had terrible morning sickness with number one,HG with number two and nothing at all with number three. One and two were boys and number three was a girl. I had HG with number four another boy and morning sickness with number five who was a girl.

11NigelTufnel · 23/02/2024 19:33

I had hg in pregnancy 1 and was only sick regularly until about 23 weeks. Pregnancy 2 never got hg, but was sick daily until the end of the pregnancy. I was prescribed anti sickness meds for the second one, but that's because I felt rough and had a toddler and work, not because I was sick to hg levels. Any time I forgot to take the medication, including the week I gave birth, I was sick.

Mum2threemonkeys · 23/02/2024 21:42

pregnancy number 1 - no hg, no sickness girl
pregnancy number 2 - no hg, slight nausea girl
pregnancy number 3 - full blown hg, different dad another girl
pregnancy number 4 - no hg at all but i did have ectopic pregnancy
i am now ttc again and petrified of hg

I am fine! I do have the odd rare, short bout of mild nausea and likewise rarely a short-lived, more intense one, that causes me to retch - this seems to happen mostly linked to brushing my teeth. But I've not vomited at all yet. Well I actually have but it was when I had migraines which is normal for me. Otherwise I feel completely fine and normal like 99 per cent of the time! I am taking Xonvea as I say though.

I would totally take the medication. Like I said, I've been taking meds pre-emptively since soon after I got my positive test.

Thank you to everyone else for sharing your experiences, it's been really reassuring. I will try to keep calm and cross my fingers! I'm going to stay on the sickness tablets for maybe another couple of weeks and then if I still feel ok I will try to wean off them then. As they are giving me side effects so obviously don't want to take them unnecessarily.

I had HG with my first. Second was less bad but still sick throughout. 34 weeks with number 3 and lots of nausea in first trimester but no actual vomiting. Still have moments when I feel sick but I have only actually been sick once this pregnancy.

WhyamInotvomiting · 25/02/2024 10:34

Just thought I'd update that I've vomited the past two mornings and have a bit more on/off nausea in the day. Still eating totally normally but drinking a bit less because I normally drink mostly water and find it tastes horrible now (if you know, you know). I think I will try increasing the dose of my sickness meds because it looks like I'm starting to get worse now. All completely manageable though compared to my last two pregnancies of course but don't want it to get worse. I feel a bit reassured too that I'm feeling some sickness now as well.

I remember reading that HG/pregnancy sickness can be more prominent dependant on baby's gender because of the hormones.
My sister didn't have it with her first, but did with her second - different baby genders.

It's a very worrying time OP. Sending you lots of love for your pregnancy ❤️

I've seen a lot of people say that, but I've got one of each and was a similar level of ill with HG both times unfortunately! Thanks for your well wishes though 🙏

Sadly that isnt true, for me anyway. i have 3 girls, i had no sickness at all with the first 2 but had full blown hg with the third.

Hi, I know this is an old post but how did your pregnancy turn out, OP? I am now 6.5 weeks pregnant with my 6th and no nausea. I had HG in 4 of my previous pregnancies and a couple weeks of what seemed like HG in the other but that got significantly better by 8 weeks and was more like normal pregnancy sickness. This time around I’ve only had bouts of mild nausea in the evening. I feel that it’s a bad sign because even in my non-hg pregnancy I felt really sick by this point.

Aw, hi.

So I did go on to develop HG again sadly. It was more of a slow burner this pregnancy though - took longer to develop more severe symptoms - and also overall not as severe as the previous two pregnancies either. I credit most of this to taking Xonvea which I never tried in my other pregnancies, it seemed to work really well for me compared to anything else. I took the least time off work by far in this pregnancy.

On the other hand, I had some level of nausea all the way through my entire pregnancy right until the birth, whereas in my other two pregnancies it had completely gone by about week 24 both times. I felt amazing immediately after birth eating my toast and no longer feeling permanently queasy!
