Cervical scan experiences?

I have a cervical scan later this afternoon due to having a biopsy last year.

I’m not really sure what the scan involves is it just a measure of the cervix or will I get to see the baby or find out the gender?

We have the 20 week scan next week so my partner wasn’t going to come to this cervical scan but if there’s a chance we could find out gender I think he would be upset if I found out without him !

I reckon all sonographers will be different. Some of them will only look at what they're supposed to be doing, others may take a quick peek at the babies sex if you ask.

Tbh I would just tell them you don't want to find out the sex and wait until next week when your DH is there. It's quite nice to tell your partner in private though in my experience. DH got the call about our NIPT results for our first and him telling me we were having a little girl was so special. For our second I found out it was a boy and loved telling him.

It depends from the sonographer as mentioned before. I had an NHS cervical length scan which took literally few minutes, and because it’s a transvaginal ultrasound they don’t want to mess around for too long - they literally just checked if babies had heartbeat and moved on to cervical length.
Then I had a private cervical length which was a great experience. They first did a proper scan for the babies checked them and measured and then moved to a transvaginal to check the length.

I’ve had them in my last two pregnancies. Each time they’ve measured the cervix then done an abdominal scan and printed a photo off of baby for me too. In my last pregnancy they did offer to tell me the sex but I declined until 20 week scan so my partner could be there. But I would imagine that’s purely up to the sonographer. They should show you baby though.

Thank you for your replies the sonographer at the cervical scan was super quick and didn’t reveal the gender but she did let me listen to the heartbeat which was lovely to hear

Hi @Peachki was the outcome of this all ok? I’ve had a biopsy and now 16 weeks pregnant but they are not offering me a cervical length scan. Just wondered if you measured ok?

Peachki · 24/05/2024 08:05

@llihl13 Heyy yes my cervix was measuring fine I was originally booked in to have 2 cervical scans throughout the pregnancy but after the first one she was happy with the length so cancelled my other and I’m now 33 weeks, I’m sure if they were concerned they would have booked you in 🙂

@Peachki oh that’s great, 33 weeks you’re so close now!! Did you just have one punch biopsy? I’ve had two biopsies but no actual treatment but I’m surprised they aren’t offering it to me. Considering paying for a private check but good to hear yours was all ok :)

PickledScrump · 24/05/2024 08:21

@llihl13 it all depends on how much was taken, if it’s a certain amount then it should flag up but you can always ask them if you have been missed and they will either check or explain why you don’t need one. They’re usually only done if you’ve actually had some sort of treatment though not just a biopsy.

@Peachki im surprised they only did one. The point of the scans is to look for shortening of the cervix that’s why you should have at least two so they can compare the length.

llihl13 · 24/05/2024 08:38

@PickledScrump I had 4mm taken in one and 10mm in the other - which to me, “10mm in aggregate’ sounds like a lot, but then I don’t know if how they take it from a biopsy is different to an actual LLETZ.

My midwife did show my biopsy reports to a consultant and they said I didnt need to be monitored but I would feel a lot more comfortable at least having one cervical length check (it isn’t offered as standard in my trust)

PickledScrump · 24/05/2024 08:51

@llihl13 i believe punch biopsy’s aren’t counted, only LLETZ treatment and cone biopsy and only if they have had over a certain amount taken, so it sounds like you don’t need to worry if you have only had the punch biopsy.

Peachki · 24/05/2024 10:23

@llihl13 I’m not sure whether it was one punch biopsy but basically I had a biopsy and the results from the biopsy meant that I needed to have LLETZ but I found out I was pregnant before I could have the treatment which may be why I was scheduled for a cervical scan

@PickledScrump not sure she just didn’t seem concerned enough to have a second one but I am being monitored by colposcopy due to my delayed LLETZ treatment I’ve had 2 appointments with them throughout pregnancy so possibly they would notice any issues during them?
