Labour with GBS

I'm currently 22 weeks pregnant with my second child. I'm not getting tested/swabbed for group b strep until I'm 36 weeks. I had it with my daughter, so they are treating me asif I have it again second time round.

With my daughter I was induced 10 days before my due date because I have history of stillbirth and multiple miscarriages. So therefore I had the antibiotics for the group b strep there and then with the induction. This time around I'm with a different hospital and consultant and she has refused induction this time which is fine, but im just curious about what happens when my waters break naturally or when I go into labour by myself? I'm terrified of not getting to the hospital on time and the high risk infection that group b can cause to the baby. And people keep saying "the second baby shoots out" is really scaring me that I won't be able to get the antibiotics in labour

I'm so sorry for your previous losses. Hope you're doing OK during this pregnancy.

As second babies are usually quicker it's very common to not get all the doses of IV antibiotics usually recommend. All you can do is go in as early as possible either when pains start or waters break.

Then where I am, paeds would see baby, examine them and do a risk calculation based on their gestation, length of time since SROM and doses of antibiotics received. The the risk calculation then recommends for example baby obs (temp, resps, sats) or even antibiotics for baby if it comes back high risk. But remember, the risk of GBS sepsis in the full term healthy newborn really only sets in when SROM has been >18 hours. And in that case, you'd definitely have been in and gotten your antibiotics! Hope this helps
