Vitamin B Complex

Hi, I wonder if anyone has any input about high stength vitamin b complex vitamins in pregnancy..

I was off the pill for 10 months and realised that my luteal phase was short. Didn't want to discuss fertility with the GP at that point because I know he'd ask me to wait for 12 months before speaking to him about it anyway. So, I did some research and found that taking a vitamin b complex could help short LPs. Low and behold - it did work, and I got pregnant after the first month but sadly that ended at 5 weeks. However, I got pregnant again the following month and I'm now 14 weeks + 3 days.

I continued taking the vitamin b complex until a couple of days ago. My worry now is that I have read one article online that said that high B12 can cause autism and the nhs website says not to take high strength vitamins? The B12 in the vitamin that I took is 500mcg - I think the max dosage is 1000mcg but information online differs. I know that in pregnancy you only need about 2.8mcg. And I know the vitamin is water soluble so anything my body doesn't need will be flushed out anyway.

But I can't help but worry and think I shouldn't have carried on taking it?

My logic was that clearly I was deficient in something and it was causing an imbalance in hormones or something, so I needed to continue taking it until the placenta had taken over. My fear was that I would miscarry.

I told my midwife that I was taking vitamin b complex at my booking appt (cos my pee was bright yelloe and I obviously had to explain!) And she didn't question me or seem concerned at all, but I didn't mention that it was high strength. I did mention that I took it to help my short LP.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone has any insight into this? Anyone take a similar vitamin during pregnancy?

FYI, the vitamin I took is the Holland & Barratt Vitamin B Complex with Vitamin C (high strength)

Thanks!

I think you should be all okay but maybe talk to your midwife about coming off of it. She may have thought you were prescribed vitamin b and didn’t think to ask anymore.
I wa prescribed vitamin b tablets throughout my current pregnancy and my gp and midwife haven’t been concerned. You could mention the strength and see what the midwife says.
