First Scan / Bloods / Urine appt - what to expect??

Hi, due my first hospital appointment next week - will be around 15 weeks I think. Had my booking in appointment with the mw about a month ago - took my history and that sort of thing, but don't know what to expect next week.

What do I take my early morning wee sample to the hospital in?? I know they don't need gallons, but how much is enough?

My scan appt is 11am and as I am weeing constantly (or it feels like it) do I need to have a full bladder for the scan? should I 'hold it in'??

Silly questions, but I don't want to get it wrong and feel daft iykwim!

Any tips?

Hi, congratulations!

You can get a wee sample container from your GP surgery, just ask the receptionist. Not sure what your hospital appointment is for other than for the scan? I only ever went in for scans so I can't help much there.

You need a full bladder for the early scan to push your uterus out of your pelvis. I live close to hospital and started drinking at home. There will be water available in the scan waiting room, if you have a few more cups you will be fine.

Hope it goes well. That first scan is amazing.

I never take a sample, they have cardboard cups at our hosp to pee into and its MUCH easier!!

take a bottle of water with you to drink on way there - ours is the same as madmouse and has a water dispenser in the scan waiting area too!

congratulations and enjoy the scan!

thanks madmouse

As I already seem to have a bit of a bump (just sort of popped out over the last few weeks) I am hoping that I wont need too much water! It is getting a bit silly with needing to wee every half an hour or so! (it probably isn;t every half an hour, but it blumin well feels like it!)

The letter says that I will have bloods taken, and as we have a dedicated womens hospital which is where we are planning to have the baby, I am hoping to actually discuss stuff as well. It does say that I will have 5 (only 5!!!) minutes with the mw to discuss anything personal. Oh and the appt will take an hour and a half.

Got to be something else happening. How long does a scan take?

scan can take anything between 5-15 minutes but its normally the waiting about that takes longer. you wait on the scan, you wait on them to type up the report re scan so you can take it with you to antenatal

am sure she'll answer any questions you have but remember you'll also start seeing your community midwife if you have other things you want to discuss

write it down before you go in so you don't come away thinking you've forgotten to ask something
