Hi all! I’m currently pregnancy with my second child and I’m currently 27 weeks but with my first I was induced at 37 weeks as he was measuring small (he was born 5lb 6oz) I just wanted to know if anyone has had the same thing happen and if their second child was also small or was it just a one time thing?x

Hi! I have 5, all born early. 36,37,38,38,35 weeks. All big babies for their gestation ranging from 8lbs2-10lbs all except my youngest born at 35 weeks and he was 6lbs12oz. He wasn't thriving and there were other complications so he wasn't my 'normal'.

Twimum23 · 08/02/2024 16:25

@Drunkenjelly my twins came at 33wks and they was 4.1lb and 3.9lb but now over nearly 20lbs they turnt 7 months today

Twimum23 · 08/02/2024 16:33

@Drunkenjelly and they was born 8wks early

Koalaslippers · 08/02/2024 16:35

All 3 small for gestational age. Was given aspirin in pregnancies 2 and 3 but it didn't make a difference. Some babies are just small.

Strokethefurrywall · 08/02/2024 16:43

Both my babies were on the small side (both by weight and physically).

DS1 was 6lb 5oz and 46cm
DS2 was 6lbs and 45cm

My niece was 5lb 13oz - my siblings and I were all small (between 6-6.4lbs) and all of us are tall now (I'm the shortest at 5' 8").

We're of Indian origin though which apparently has something to do with it. We just have teeny babies!

Clomid1 · 08/02/2024 17:30

I had IUGR in both pregnancies
DD1 : 2.225kg at 37weeks + 2
DD2 : 2.040kg at 37 weeks

I was induced for DD2 due to growth issues. They never found the cause. My placenta has been sent off for testing for DD2 so hoping that will give me some answers.

I have 5, all besides my youngest were small babies. Youngest was 7lb, eldest 5lb3. All born at term though.
Also of Indian origin, my siblings and I were all between 5 and 6lb.
I had loads of extra scans, all indicating that babies were growing but just slowly. None of them besides my youngest dropped any weight after they were born.
Eldest is now 20!

Sirrah · 08/02/2024 23:07

My first was small, 5lb 9oz at 39w. My second arrived at 34 weeks but was 6lb 4oz. My third was born at 39+3 weighing 9lb 3oz!

JoyApple · 08/02/2024 23:09

Both of mine were small. I had extra calories for the last one and it just piled up on my body instead :(

Opine · 08/02/2024 23:15

I was told it goes off your own height and weight. ie A small baby for a 6ft tall woman would not be considered small for a 5ft tall woman.

All my children have weighed around 7lb and were born between 40-41wks. I’m tall so they were all considered low birth weight, even the twins which is madness to me.
Im tall but have a BMI of 19 so I really don’t know what else I could have produced!

Moier · 08/02/2024 23:39

My first a week late tiny 6 pounds ( girl) my 2nd a week late 6 pound 13 ( a girl) 8 years apart.

Belle89 · 09/02/2024 21:23

My first 12 years ago was 6lb exactly at 39 weeks so small for gestation. Had one growth scan in the weeks prior to delivery due to bump growth slowing but that was way off and predicted him to be high 7lbs.
Currently 27 weeks too with my 2nd so its interesting to see others experiences.
Taking aspirin and have first growth scan planned for 32 weeks I believe.
Op do you have any scheduled in?

110APiccadilly · 09/02/2024 21:28

Both of mine were tiny, both under 5lb, DD1 was born at 38+something (can't remember what the something was!) and DD2 at 37+0.

DD2 was about half a pound bigger than DD1 though.

LaVitesse2022 · 17/05/2024 09:48

@Clomid1 if you don't mind me asking, did you get the placenta results back? Interestingly my DS1 was born at 38 weeks also weighing 2.040kg and they suspect placenta issues. Completely healthy otherwise. I think in a future pregnancy I'll be closely monitored for growth though

Clomid1 · 17/05/2024 11:12

@LaVitesse2022 No I didn’t get the results back unfortunately. I am really annoyed, they sent it off for testing. The lab replied with can you please confirm the birth weight of the baby and no one replied. I only found out a month later by which point they’d already binned the placenta.

DD1 is now nearly 2. She’s very healthy, reached all her milestones on time. . She’s not the smallest child anymore. She’s average now. Medically there are no concerns about her.

DD2 is now 15 weeks she’s still quite small only 4.8kg but she’s jumped up from 0.1 centile to 2nd centile and tracking well on that line. Again medically no concerns.

i do genuinely believe the reason for their iugr was maternal and something to do with me rather than a genetic issue with them.

For DD2 I had to have growth scans every 4 weeks from 28 weeks. She was within range at 28 weeks and 32 weeks. However at 32 weeks she’d fallen out of range for HC but they only seemed to care about estimated foetal weight. She then fell out of range on all the graphs at 36 weeks. Foetal medicine rescanned at 36+5 was induced at 36+6 and she arrived at 37 weeks on the dot.
i was also given aspirin at 16 weeks for her.

All we can do is eat right, exercise and go into triage if we feel reduced movements I guess. It still makes me sad I’ll never know why. How old is your DS now?

LaVitesse2022 · 17/05/2024 11:44

@Clomid1 thank you for replying. It's really annoying they never tested the placenta. You never got to know for sure what was causing the restricted growth. I think something similar happened with mine, a silly miscommunication between hospital and lab meant it hasn't been tested yet, though midwife says it will now that they spotted the error.

My DS is 7.5 months. Similar to your DD1, he was born on the 0.2 percentile but started to creep up the scale and by 6 months was on the 20th. I stopped worrying about it as he's clearly been thriving and gaining weight well. Nothing medically concerning about him either.

I developed pre-eclampsia during labour and they suspect there was something wrong with the placenta which led to restricted growth for baby and caused the pre-eclampsia symptoms. This was never picked up during pregnancy and I feel somewhat let down by the prenatal care I received . He was born by emergency c-section after labour not progressing.

Just for the pre-eclampsia I'll be extra monitored next time. But I worry the over-monitoring over baby growth will lead them and me to decisions like an early induction that wouldn't be necessary. Some babies are just born small but otherwise healthy. And some women do seem to tend to have smaller babies.
