Hand foot and mouth in pregnancy

I’ve had a fever and sore throat for 2 days now. Decided to phone the doctor this morning and they asked me to come in. Between the call and my appointment I developed lots of blisters on my hands and a number of ulcers in my mouth.

I was with my 2 year old nephew at the weekend and it turns out he has hand foot and mouth.

The doctor said he strongly suspects it’s hand foot and mouth and also tonsillitis. He said hand foot and mouth is rare in adults but nothing to worry about. I suppose because I’m 17 weeks pregnant I’m just a little anxious if the fever or my lack of eating will affect the baby.

Has anyone had this in pregnancy? Also, does anyone have any tips on how I can relieve the discomfort of the blisters and the discomfort of my throat? Thanks!

Hi OP! I currently have hf&m for the second time in this pregnancy. I’m currently 36+1. My toddler is in nursery and we’ve had EVERYTHING this year! No one seems too worried that I’ve had/ have it. Take paracetamol
to keep your temperature down - although the biggest concern over fevers is in the first trimester anyway.

You could try gargling with lukewarm salt water for your throat, I’ve also found that strepsils help. Me and my toddler are both having a lot of fruit based ice lollies too.. just don’t go citrus as the acid can make it hurt worse. Please don’t worry about lack of
appetite/ eating for a little bit, baby will still be able to take all they need from you and your reserves.

Epsom salts warm but not hot bath will help when the blisters have scabbed, but maybe try calamine in the meantime. I didn’t need it but used it in my first pregnancy when I got PUPPS rash and it worked great. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

(edited to add how many weeks pregnant I am)

Thanks for your response! Sorry to hear you’ve had it not only once but twice.

thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely get some Epsom salts and calamine.

I’ll also stock up on easy to eat foods.

Hopefully you feel better soon!
