My doctor prescribed me ferrous sulfate 200mg when I was anaemic (still taking them now at 37w)
Could you call your doctors and ask them to do a prescription for you? If not I would definitely speak to the pharmacist before starting to take any

I rang the doctor she said just speak to a pharmacist! its only slight anemic not severe so I think it'll be ok but they wont let me ask my doctor so unsure what to do

thats my doctor for you just worries me I dont want to take too much or too little :(

It's actually 110+ during pregnancy because you have more blood and therefore your iron is diluted.
It's fine to take those iron tablets in pregnancy, just take the dose on the bottle. But for your own comfort I'd recommend getting iron bisglycinate (instead of fumarate which is in the tablets in your link) as it's less likely to give you constipation!

ZuliKyanLarsFoz · 07/02/2024 14:56

These only have a very small amount of iron in. Your iron is likely to continue dropping in pregnancy and these tablets won't be sufficient to increase your levels. I'd speak to the pharmacist but you need something more like Ferrous Sulphate and just take every other day (there is evidence to suggest that they are more effective taken this way).

ejndwejnfk · 07/02/2024 15:55

now im confused I just got these couldn't speak to a pharmacy was planning on going back later to ask? shall I ask a midwife instead on a non urgent number ? my doctors is impossible to contact so Is my midwife at my doctors?
my doctors doesn't ever ring back just texts the results which is so annoying as I always have questions..

Hi there I am a midwife. Your iron level is just slightly below to what is considered normal ar your stage in pregnancy. You need to take 200 mg of Ferrous Sulfate once a day with orange juice and ask for your iron levels to be rechecked in 6 weeks. I am pretty confident your iron levels will be good by then. Make sure you eat lots of fibre- iron tablets can cause constipation.

hello, so these iron tablets from boots aren't any good then ?? I need ones prescribed from doctor at 200mg?

My level is also 109 tho that was at 28 weeks, I was prescribed ferrous fumarate 210mg twice a day for 2 weeks and then once a day for the remaining 2 weeks, with orange juice. They are rechecking my bloods at 33 weeks (currently 31). My midwife sent it through my doctor so I had to get it on prescription (also meant I didn't have to pay!).

I think you can get 200 from Boots directly however you will have to pay. They will be free on prescription from GP. However the Boots ones might have additional vitamins to aid absorption.

ejndwejnfk · 07/02/2024 19:13

just going to take these for now and call the non urgent midwife number as doctor never let me talk to them! pharmacist said these should be just take and then talk to my midwife on my app end of month but feel like thats too long to wait t

A midwife on here recommend this type of iron. It has better bioavailability than other types and it doesn’t cause any nasty side effects such as constipation/diarrhoea/nausea

I’ve been on iron tablets for the last couple of weeks, the 210mg ferrous fumarate ones. The gp said they’re much stronger than the ones you get from the shops. I was only told today at a midwife appointment that they’re only effective if you take a source of vitamin c with them so make sure you stock up on that too.

ejndwejnfk · 07/02/2024 20:47

im going to ring the non urgent midwife number on my notes tomorrow and ask no point asking gp as they dont let you speak to the mw unless you have an appointment!
