Ill when pregnant- is it normal to take longer to recover?

I’m currently 9 weeks pregnant and last week I came down with a horrible virus. Started as a headcold, then had 2 days of flu like symptoms, fever, weakness, fatigue etc. thought it was improving at the end of last week but I’ve been getting worse again. It’s now been a week and I’m getting no better.
otherwise fit and healthy but I feel awful and can’t do anything but lie on the sofa all day.

is it normal for bugs to hit worse and take longer to recover when pregnant? Thinking of running midwife to check but don’t want to waste their time.

I felt worse when I had a cold in pregnancy and had a lingering cough for ages. Usually I would take sudafed, night nurse and strepsils, which would help me feel more human/help me sleep. I assumed it was because I couldn't take those that I felt worse.

Also so much of your energy is being taken up growing a baby AND the first trimester is so difficult.

Get well soon.

Edit to add: I did eventually speak to an obstetrician about it (appointment was for something else) who told me there was 'no need to suffer' and to take piriton! I would never have done this, but I figured he's an expert and I felt better immediately.

I’m in the exact same boat right now. I’ve had a cold which turned to a sinus infection for nearly 2 weeks now and just can’t get rid of it. Every time I start feeling a bit better I suddenly get worse again. I think it’s just to do with having a weakened immune system in pregnancy due to everything else our bodies are doing!

Your immune system is different in pregnancy to stop your body thinking the baby is a danger to you. Unfortunately that's probably why you feel so bad.

Yup .. your body knows it needs to protect baby at all costs so your immune system isn’t running at full steam plus you can’t have the good medicine so you feel it more

How people love pregnancy is beyond me it was stressful and tiring

Yeah your body will definately feel it more.Rest as much as you can & stay hydrated. Try electrolyte drink aswell or sachet that may help you. Smoothies home made that include ginger & turmeric too natural antibiotic for your body.

I’ve just had a 6 night stay in hospital in final timester due to a horrible infection which I didn’t know I had! Went in for reduce movement and ended up on iv fluids antibiotics and all sorts. Recovering still after 2 weeks getting there.

good luck!

Thanks all. I’m usually pretty fit and healthy so if I am ill I kick it within a few days. It’s so unlike me to spend all day lying down but being upright is just so exhausting right now!
