Hello! I’m looking for a birthkeeper/Doula cover west/central London. Would really like to get some personal recommendations if anyone is holy to share :)

Sorry not to have a recommendation but I need to ask .. what in earth is a birthkeeper ?? Or was it a typo ?

Bemilyirvine · 31/01/2024 21:50

To be honest I’m new on this journey but read online that some Doula’s prefer to be called birth keepers. I’m not expert though… that’s just what Google told me and was trying to be respectful

If opt for a qualified doctor every time ... no interest in doula people

I thought the difference was that doulas are birth partners/supporters while birthkeepers believe in freebirthing and try to minimise the participation of the midwife?

That's what I've been told by midwife friends - would love to know if I'm wrong. None of my business but please don't go the freebirthing route!

Bemilyirvine · 31/01/2024 22:40

I’m probably completely wrong. I literally heard the word Doula for the first time a couple weeks ago and did a few Google searches. That’s why I thought I would come here for some recommendations. Perhaps this isn’t the place to put this, but I saw some threads from years ago where people responded with recommendations so thought I would give it a go.

There is an organisation called Doula UK who can probably help you, OP.

Wow would love one especially for Postpartum but can't afford it.
Hope your able to find one.

I had a natural birth at my midwife centre but they are more natural then Midwives at conaultamt led hospitals. So they used essential oils in pregnancy and during labour and "moving babies" manouvers etc. Was fantastic felt like doulas.

Qualified Drs are there for emergencies they are great for that they are trained for that. They are not trained for natural and natural aided births. Hence why women who are low risk are advised to go for a midwife led center as studies have shown low risk patients who have OBs end up with unecesaary interventions and complications due to such interventions. I know my BIL is a OBGYN with over 25years experince. All he knows is high risk and emergency situations thats their bread and butter.
