Hey, I just had a little of beechams the liquid and now I've read up that you shouldn't do it in first trimester I hope I haven't done any damage 😭😭😭does anyone know? Of course I won't have anymore.

Beechams liquid contains phenylephrine which works by constricting blood vessels, so obviously this is not ideal for a placenta, but there is no actual evidence that it affects the foetus - it's a theoretical risk.

It also contains guaifenesin which is safe in pregnancy if it is alcohol-free. In this case, it does contain alcohol, but the dose is so tiny that it's the equivalent of a mouthful of wine. We are told that there is no safe amount of alcohol in pregnancy, but I wouldn't think twice about this!

In short, it doesn’t say that Beechams is dangerous, just that it is unproven to be safe in pregnancy. There are issues with testing anything on pregnant women, so this is a borderline meaningless phrase.

Tl,dr: don't have any more but your baby will be fine, as long as you haven't been gulping it for days.

Thank you for that information sorry for the delay I fell asleep and then forgot to reply. Then was at work. But I appreciate that 🙏I only had one sip, but won't have anymore now.

I'm glad you were asleep and not worrying!
