Suspected Ectopic - positive outcome

Hi all,

I wanted to jump on to give a little hope to those of you who are undergoing tests for an expected ectopic prenancy / pregnancy of unknown location (PUL).

I had an ectopic pregnancy 10 years ago which resulted in the removal of my left fallopian tube an I went of to have a successful pregnancy.

My husband an I started trying again had a positive test the first week of Jan but I had very bad period like cramps and given my history, the Dr's were concerned I was having another ectopic so they investigated:

The first step was a scan which showed loads of unexpected problems like fibroids, hemorrhagic cysts and severe scar tissue and adenoymosis.. but it also showed an empty sac.. the sonigrpaher explained this could be a very early pregnancy (from my dates I should have been 6+1) or she said it could be a pseudopregancy which is just a sac with fluid in an can be a bi product of an ectopic.

They explained that they would do 3 sets of blood tests, and that they would expect to see my HCG levels double every 48hrs..

So first test my levels were 1048.. 2 days later they were 1304 and a further 2 days later, they were 1673...this was an average increase of around 29%.. in 'normal pregnancies my provider expected to see an increase of atleast 60% but this wasn't the case so a scan was booked for 1 week after the first one.

We had a consultation first and they pretty much prepared me for the worst. My consultant said in levels which increase as low as mine, the outcome usually isn't very good, but she did see things all the time which surprised her..

Anyway, we have the scan an staring at us on the screen was a very clear little jelly bean shaped blob with a heavy heartbeat..

I don't know who was more shocked, me or the consultant!

So it's very early days but after reading so many studies an reviewing the threads on here I fully anticipated bad news so this is just to say don't for those going through the same worries.. don't give up hope as you just never know xx

This is amazing! Wishing you healthy pregnancy! I reckon you're due in September? There is a Sep Fb group if interested

BoyMomma4 · 22/01/2024 20:21

Yes so she's put me at 6 weeks now which is only a week off what I thought so I'll be due mid September.

Would love suggestions for any groups ect. Fingers and toes crossed it all turns out OK, this will be our last regardless of the outcome so praying for the best but preparing for the worst. My husband was very smug as he said all along he thought it was going to be fine haha xx

Thank you for sharing! I was sent to the hospital yesterday after my booking appointment due to pains in my side. They took bloods and say they are going to repeat in 48hr if it’s not above 1500 and if it is they are going to scan. I am feeling anxious but reading your story has helped. It’s my first ever pregnancy. I am currently 5 weeks

BoyMomma4 · 24/01/2024 10:54

I'm so glad to hear that, don't forget the HCG figure you start on isn't as important as how much it increases by. From everything I've read, the reason they will be checking that is because over 1500 they would expect to see something in the uterus so if your figure is below 1500, they may suggest waiting a little while. From my dates (which are 100% accurate I should have been 6 weeks on my first scan) but this showed an empty sac. On my second scan I should have been 7+1 but I was showing 5+6 but there was a growing baby with a beating heart. Dont worry too much as when we ovulate can really vary so you may have just ovulate late like I did an so you could be a week behind. I am really hoping for the best for you, keep us updated xx

thanks for the reply, my level was 1827 so I went today and they found an empty sack, they couldn’t see the ovary properly of where I have pain so I am going back for more bloods tomorrow as they can’t rule out ectopic. It’s so stressful! Xx
