ketones in urine

anyone know anything about ketones is urine? Just had 24 week check and found these, followed by lots of questions about if i'm eating enough. No protein or sugar in urine though. Looked it up and it said that these are cause when your body break down fat due to lack of carbohydrates. They didn't really say anything to me about it, should i worry?

Was it a +, a ++, or a +++? Your body goes through alot when you are pregnant and a trace (+) should be fine. Did you have anything to eat before doing the urine sample?

they never said what if it was a+ a++ or a+++, so i assume it must have been low? they asked if i had lunch which i had about 3/4 hour before doing sample. I'm guessing they would have said if it was a concern?

Thanks for your speedy reply

That's alright. I bet you are worried. Soemtimes keytones show when you have not had enough to eat. It's not normally anything to worry about if there are no other symptoms.

I had ketones in my urine when I was being induced. I'd basically not eaten for 36 hours due to nerves and worry so my body was breaking down fat for energy. Which to quote mw "is great if you're dieting but not so great when you've got hours of labour ahead"
I wouldn't worry too much you've probably just not eaten enough recently.

I had ketones in my urine when I was about 35 weeks after a nasty cold meant I hardly ate or drank anything for a few days. MW told me to make sure I was drinking plenty even if I couldn't face food, so the ketones would be flushed out. They can make you feel really lethargic and generally crap apparently.

Sounds like a good excuse for a nice biscuit to em

what would/could it mean? perhaps i shouldn't ask! wish i had asked midwife a bit more but didn't wanna look silly!

hi i had this at about 30 weeks with dd2 now 8 weeks. They also asked if i was eating enough (which i was) They weren't really worried about it but after it showed up at second check four weeks later they just did a blood test just in case. That came back fine and then consequent ante natals everything was fine.
I wouldn't worry if you feel ok. Did you have a new container for your specimen as using an old one can sometimes show keytones. Hence i had got a new bottle after the blood test so not sure if it was the bottle that was contaminated ?

mummy would call in and ask for new container before next ante natal.

i had this at 38 weeks following some crazy diarrohea. it means you're dehydrated and/or haven't eaten enough

had a blood test to be sure and everything was fine. told to go home and try and eat and drink

Mummywannabe · 19/03/2008 19:43

thanks pinata - spoke to my friend who is a nurse and she said dehydration likely cause, and to be honest i don't drink as much as i know i should. need to pee every bloody 1/2 hour as it is! Oh well if is best for the bump!
