Reheating rice while pregnant

Hi everyone,

So I didn't know you weren't suppose to reheat rice. I'm starting to freak out because I've done this already a few times during this pregnancy and I'm 16 weeks pregnant. I'm not even sure while I was reheating it if it was hot enough. I don't want to spiral lol but has anyone done this while pregnant and everything turn out fine? Please let me know. Thank you!

If you get rice food poisoning you know about it. Quickly. If it was more than a day ago and you've not had symptoms, you can relax.

Don't panic, If you already ate it and had no ill effects, then you got away with it. There is a (reasonably high) risk of food poisoning from re-heated rice, so best not do it again.

You'll be fine x

Thank you everyone for responding. I've always done it but I have never been sick from it. I was just worried about the baby. I had it for lunch and that was 8 hours ago. I won't be reheating rice ever again.

It is perfectly safe to reheat rice provided it has been stored properly and it is reheated properly. It's normal in Asian cooking to cook rice and then let it cool and dry a little to prepare it for frying.

The "you absolutely can not reheat rice" is a misinterpretation of the general caution-first message that it is risky to reheat rice that was, perhaps, cooked days ago and not stored in the correct conditions.

Provided you aren't leaving left-over Takeaway on the countertop for three days and then giving it a cursory 60 seconds in the microwave, then it should be perfectly fine.

To echo what @XDownwiththissortofthingX said, reheating rice is fine. The thing you need to ensure is that it is cooled very quickly. If I have left over rice I spread it over a big cool plate to get it to 'not hot' then put it in the fridge PDQ. You should do the same with pasta.

My husband had the absolute worst food poisoning from reheating rice. I honestly have never heard someone be so violently ill! We never re-heat our rice now, just not worth the risk. But if you feel absolutely fine now changes are you'll be fine, no harm to baby

To echo PP, although it should be properly reheated, it's actually the initial cooling which is the most important bit. I rarely reheat rice but would always run cold water through left over plain rice to cool it quickly.

I did this throughout my whole pregnancy and all was fine xx

It's not the reheating, it's the poor storage before hand that, very occasionally, causes issues.

A massive proportion of the world reheats rice - and what is microwave rice if not reheated?

Observe propr food hygine standards, and rice is fine.
